How much are you paying off in 2 weeks?
How much will you have left thats liquid after the fact?
What have you done with the money you saved since the pause began, if anything?

If you didn't plan for payments to resume, you're going to have a rough time.

I've seen too many examples here and elsewhere of people who stopped paying and upped their quality of life while waiting for loan forgiveness.

Should have just kept paying.

I paid off my loans a few months early recently. Almost 11 years after leaving grad school.

Don't have any student loans.. Went to a community college for a couple semesters but between going to school full time and working full time I couldn't do both. Didn't want any debt so I just kept working and quit school.

While it sucks that student loans are a thing, I'm not in favor of just wiping them out or reducing them just because. Not a Republican, either, for whatever that's worth. Not even a conservative. It's crazy to me to lump all of these things together like you are this just because you believe that. It's nuts.

Also, what's going to happen to the people taking out loans now?

It's not just because. Many were victims of predatory loan servicers and bad policy that was never implemented well. This is besides the point of its a travesty that we burden people with debt for bettering themselves and looking to maximize their marketability, especially when we have this fascination for the meritocracy.

No one should have to take out loans for school, its a damn shame. College costs need to come down across the board and we should be looking to maximize quality to compete with other leading nations but no, we are going to continue to saddle people with debt and make higher education less affordable as our society continues to require higher and higher credentialing.

While I get what you're saying I still think there's an element of personal responsibility you're not addressing.

Take my sister for example. She worked hard and was fortunate to be selected as a student at our local early college highschool. She graduated highschool with an associates degree.

She decided after graduation to go to an expensive private college. Tens of thousands dollars per semester. Could have gotten the same degree at a state school and saved tons of money. She took out loans, of course, and constantly bitches about paying them back. Whenever I mention it was her decision I get the death stare... But it's true. All that and at one point I made more than her with no degree. The only reason I make less now is I took a way different job to be home more with my wife and kids.

So, while I get that there are different situations I also feel that people need to be held responsible for their own choices. Just my opinion...

So people shouldn't be held responsible for obligations they agreed to? Or be bound by decisions they make? Example being my sister... She chose the expensive school. How is it fair to the person who took that extra cost into account and went with the cheaper option?

I'm sure it sounds like I'm heartless and don't care. I do care but also think people should be responsible for their own actions and decisions.

If all you have is personal anecdotes and appeals to "fairness" then maybe you should just stop talking.

Nobody gives a fuck about you and your sister feeling slighted. How about instead we worry about the millions of households living paycheck to paycheck that might get thrown to the streets and cause an economic meltdown because of these loans.

Consider all the things we dont let 16 and 17 year olds do in this country

now consider that theres a huge student loan industry our there and the entire country basically gets indoctrinated from a young age that you need to go to college

Then we let 16 and 17 year olds permanently sign their lives away to debt with no way to ever discharge it

How is my sister dumb? I genuinely want to know why you characterize her as such?

So my perception/opinion isn't valid, but yours is? Copy that... You easily dismiss my sister's difficulties in paying her loans yet chastise me for supposedly not caring about others and their struggles.

Why do you feel it's not the individuals decision that put them in the predicament? No matter the situation or ramifications I'm certain nobody had a gun to their head forcing them to sign up for a loan. Perhaps in a metaphorical way with the hopes of attaining a high paying job or a career. But a degree isn't necessary for that.

Anyway, I think we're going to have to agree to disagree here. I'm not changing my mind because I don't see any compelling reason to. And I don't think your going to change your mind, either. So, for whatever it's worth, thanks for the debate.

Im not saying my opinion matters more than anyone else's. What I'm saying is that you and your sisters feelings are irrelevant when we are talking about problems that implicate our entire society and economy.

Use data and evidence to make your arguments, not your personal feelings.

There really wasn't even a debate. All you did was cry about your feelings. Sorry that I'm worried about children becoming homeless and not your fucking fee fees. Hope you and your sister Karen have a nice life.

I love it when the truth leaks out from the student debt cancellation brigade.
Whether someone can pay it back or not doesn't matter to them, hence the utterly insane income caps like $250K.
If someone like me, who dutifully paid off my loans and feels like a sucker that others get them forgiven later, or someone who never went to college and went into a trade complains about how patently unfair it is, we're told we should just be happy for the ones who benefit or whatever.
When I ask, "why not a blanket stimulus check to everyone under X income?" that can be used on student loans, to go to college for the first time, or whatever else, the cancellation proponents NEVER have an answer.
Because they just want theirs, while gaslighting us and claiming we're the greedy ones...
Even if my middle class income was above the threshold for this blanket stimulus, I'd support it b/c at least then it'd be going to people who need the money the most

Interesting article. I was especially drawn to the coaches salary increases. I've read that some schools charge a "sports" fee to their students every year. I need to read more about this but that's crazy to me... I'm all for athletics, don't get me wrong. But maybe not at expense of other students and their costs subsidizing the salary of coaches etc. Like I said, I need to do more research.

The college I work for the coach gets paid more than anybody and all the athletic facilities have been updated. But non-student athletes have dorms that are full of black mold and no A/C. The whole point of athletics if for the money to trickle down and I haven't seen that.
