The opening was pretty cool, but I'm not sure what I was in jail for. And did Shepard know the little boy who got blown up by the aliens?

The idea is that you were under investigation for the stuff you did in the Arrival DLC in ME2.

If you didn't play Arrival, Shep blew a whole ass Relay because the Reapers were basically on their way in.

It went badly for the Batarian colony in the system.

Also the rest of the planets.

ME1 and 2 are on PS3 as well.

Arrival is what sets you up for the beginning
Shadow Broker explains why Liara is the Shadow Broker
Overlord gets some passing references
Zaeed and Kasumi have side missions if you recruited and kept them alive in 2

Tbh none of it is critical except Firewalker, which helps you understand Vega and Cortez arguing about the Mako vs the Hammerhead :P

I don't have 1 or 2 and I traded a friend my copy of Blinx: The Time Sweeper for this game back in 2012, but never played it. Finally wanted to see why my little step-sister loved the series so much for.

ME3 is a good game but tbh a lot of the appeal is the groundwork/world building set up in 1 and seeing those characters
/plotlines evolve in 2 and 3.

Like you'll still have a good time, but I'd be surprised if you "got it" without establishing the connection to this world before the conclusion.

Even still, let us know what major decisions you make. Curious to see what someone who only plays 3 decides to do with certain big "choose this side or that side" missions >_>

It's fine. They had a thing at the start of the game that filled in the blanks for 1 and 2.

ME3 was my first mass effect as well because I finally got a console that could play an ME game (the wii u).

ME3's opening is super clunky but it picks up once the plot actually gets going

What you're in jail for actually depends

If you played the Mass Effect 2 DLC Arrival then Shepard murdered over 300,000 Batarians to delays the Reapers for a few months

If you didn't play the ME2 DLC Arrival then Shepard just turned up in a Cerberus ship after returning from the dead to working for Ceberus and the Alliance is like "Yeah bro, we don't trust ya"

You're massively missing out by not playing 1 or 2 first although the game does go out of it's way to be accessible for new players

God I was uneasy when the opening of ME3 happened. Shep's in jail, now he's in front of the human council, then he does an action one liner, then the windows explode and everyone else dies etc. etc. - like ME2 had an actionized opening, but it didn't feel like a c-list action movie y'know.

I hope you enjoy the game, personally I think the gameplay is the best it's ever been (and unless you're playing the remaster, you should really check out the multiplayer - it's so fucking fun). But while the tone and quality of the writing begins to level out after that first mission, you should know that the lead writer on the first two games left Bioware before the third game, so the story you're about to see comes from a new guy and I think a handful of people who had been there from the start. It's not the story that first guy was building up to.

Great. The sexy robot just stole on the hot crewmate I wanted to romance. Why couldn't she have killed the annoying blue one instead?

Because blue girl is the developers's boring ass personal favourite romance.

Why not get the Legendary Edition?

I wouldn't really call it the best DLC, but it IS probably the best send off that you could have for the game despite all of the blunders of the trilogy. Truthfully, a lot of people like to headcanon the game goes like this:

ME3 -> Ending -> ME3: Citadel DLC. Keeping that in mind makes it *much* easier to stomach the endings. Because no matter what anyone says, the final mission of ME3 is god awful.

It doesn't have the ME3 multiplayer, which is good enough to play in its own right. Really should have turned that mode into a fully fleshed out game.

The Citadel DLC is a DLC campaign that takes place on the Citadel. Going to the citadel hub is something that just happens in the main game.

That's not the Citadel DLC.

The Citadel as a location is in the base game, the DLC is an entire set of missions.

if you got reinstated as a Spectre, you should be allowed to do this. If you didn't, then you have no reason to be under house arrest because you don't work for the alliance because you never officially got notorized as working for them again after you died.

Plain and simple, the whole opening to me3 is screwy.

I thought Leviathan was pretty cool. :(

I like Leviathan's gameplay but it's clearly a rushed piece of lore to redress the ending and try to mitigate the backlash to it and what it provides is honestly not better in the least and it's not even attempted to be integrated in the main game as it ought to be.
