Possibly. When the boomers go extinct, there could be a huge drop in religion

I'm not, lots of people believe in god, everybody has their own version tho, some believe that god exists but god doesn't give a fuck about us, some believe god exists but we pissed them off so much they abandoned us, some believe god exists but only watches never interferes, and some exist who believe that god guides everyone of us under the guise of free will.

That's just for Christianity from 2009 to 2019, but it shows a sharp decline and uptick in those who are unaffiliated.

It got even worse during the pandemic and after. Extreme zealotry has turned more and more people away from religion over the last few years.

There's even a topic about how religious zealots feel Jesus was too woke now and are themselves turning away from religion. It's hilarious.

There's a difference between believing in God/some higher power, and being part of an organized religious group. Organized religion has dropped significantly in popularity, but that doesn't necessarily mean atheism has seen a large spike in popularity gain.

I mean it's anecdotal but I feel like people with an Islamic or Hindu background are less likely to go completely atheist

Organized religion is still the majority in America according to most polls, but that number has been dropping. However, when asked about God or a belief in a higher power irl, everyone I encountered either said they still believe in God despite no longer practicing their religion, or they believe that there is possibly a higher power out there. The latter, I can only go by people in my area (which was a lot), but I imagine the results are similar in other areas.

It's not. Lots of people say they believe because it's social norm. I'd be surprised if even half who identify as believers actively worship.

It's kind of a weird statistic. Yeah it's at 80% but only about 50% say they believe without a doubt it's true. The rest believe in the possibility, which isn't exactly a belief in God, its a maybe there is one, maybe there isn't. The rest say there is no God and no possibility, about 20%

Over 80% claim to believe in God. It's a safe bet the vast majority of them don't, they just see it as a convenient excuse to push their "morals".

I want to see the percentage of people who actively take time out of their week and go to a place of worship. That would be a more accurate metric I think.

oh that's interesting, and a good pt. as well. Most articles don't mention the percent who believe it without a doubt...etc...

I suspect there's a correlation between these and things like when filling in a form it asks for your religion, or how literally any presidential candidate has to act like they're Christian if they want to stand a chance at winning, even though religion is completely irrelevant in such matters.

The day America has a presidential candidate who feels s/he can actually say out loud, "No, I don't have a church" while on the campaign trail, and go on to win -- that'll be the day America has really grown up at last.

I wonder how many people believe in "God", and how many people took that question to mean having any kind of spiritual beliefs at all. There are plenty of spiritual folks who don't believe in gods or even necessarily spirits.
