Why not? Much of the edits we got were how Lucas originally envisioned things, he was just too limited by the tech of the time. You're not daring to question the correctness of the creator's original intent, are you?

So people love the scene with Han literally walking all over a pint-sized Jabba? Because you can't argue against that being original intent limited by tech, since it was shot at the same time as the original.

Because there is arguably a difference between what the original trilogy did due to limitations of what the creator envisioned versus a translation error going from Japanese to English.

Do you feel that's a distinct enough difference to negate the inherent hypocrisy of one nostalgia-fueled preference being bad and ridiculed while a too-similar one is universally praised as superior?

The fact that it's a translation error isn't all that relevant imo, because as I've said, artistry-by-accident is very much a thing. A different, less-controversial comparison would be the Jaws mechanical shark not working as intended, famously resulting in the less-is-more horror masterpiece we ended up with.

Aerith is correct, and for the same reason that "Tie-dus" is correct. Namely, that Square had a thing for naming protagonists after things relating to earth, water, and sky/air for a while during the PSX and PS2 era.

Aeris sounds better, but yes, she is supposed to basically be "Earth" to match "Cloud." Like how Tidus was basically "tides" (his favored sport and the water-sword are just further playing on this).

It extends to KH as well, with Sora literally meaning sky, and the prequel trio of keyblade users all having elemental names (Ventus, Aqua, Terra).

I know Aerith is correct but Aeris just sounds better >_>

Yes because at the end of the day it was never an intended spelling of the name and the creators corrected that for future installments. Where as George is so damn fixated on fixing something he ends up with this:

You're saying in this post that Square saw what they perceived to be an error and fixed it, with the 'fix' arguably being worse. Lucas saw what he perceived to be an error and fixed it, with the 'fix' arguably being worse. You kinda just proved my point for me.

The fix being what was intended because the issue came from a TRANSLATION ERROR. This isnt a fix because they decided they couldnt have her name being Aerith due to some limitations of technology.

Aeris, because as a kid, that was her name. I didn't know until years later people called her Aerith, and just assumed it was a Japanese translation thing.

likewise, I say Ash and Gary from Pokemon and not Satoshi and Shigeru from Pocket Monsters. The Japanese names are the correct names but the English names were in the version I played.

No, because u after s (which is the closest thing to th Japanese has) is silent. For example, desu is pronounced like dess.

I will never remember which one is suppose to be correct because this will be argued until the end of civilization.

it depends on whether the preceding consonant was voiced/proceeding consonant is voiced or not

it makes sense if you consider how your mouth/throat forms words, but is confusing otherwise

I cant think of anything that has the u actually pronounced, but you may be right, I cant recall. Sasuke, Daisuke, etc. all the Japanese names and words I can think of, the u in su is silent unless its the first syllable.

i was mostly kidding, tbh i dont think the u in su is voiced there heavily, but i haven't lived in tokyo for a decade and im rusty AF

but the difference between "k" and "g" sounds is literally just guttural voicing and why (ka) and (ga) are written how they are. same with T and D, H and B/P, etc

Spelling her name Aeris is like calling Final Fantasy 4, 2, and 6, 3. I just can't do it anymore.

While we're at it, Square should restore Cyan's name too to the original, Kaien.
People been mispronouncing it like the color than the pepper.

There's also Edward in FFIV which originally Gilbert.
Which makes it awkward is because Edge's real name is Edward Geraldine.

Because the vast majority of players aren't going to "glitch" past the character naming screen, therefore whatever the game refers to the character as "internally" is irrelevant to them.

No, it was the original and "official" transliteration of his name for a time, presumably before they realized that "Battsu" being localized as "Butz" would lead to mockery on the English side of things.

Spell it Aerith, say it Aeris.

In a game where she is consistently referred to as Aeris, that's what I'll call her.

In anything where she is consistently referred to as Aerith, I'll call her that.

As far as which name I prefer, I have no preference either way, they're both fine.

If you're going to get mad about that, sounds like a 'you' problem.

I always default to Aeris.
