Abortion is the mother of all wedge issues, one that Republicans have spent decades cultivating. Too much of their voting base still genuinely believes that it's the most important singular issue of our time, and have warped their personal sense of morality around it: they believe that you simply cannot be a good person if you are pro-choice. The GOP has no option but to continue to dig in their heels over it, because they would lose their base overnight by backtracking on it.

Thats exactly why republicans abandoned the whole states rights argument and tried to get it banned by the Supreme Court as soon as the vote in Kansas didnt go the way they wanted

They never should have overturned Roe v Wade. They could have run on the POSSIBILITY of overturning it for decades. Now that they have, they're facing insane backlash

Republicans have spent the last several decades cultivating abortion as a key element of their platform and it is a key voting issue for a plurality of their base. They literally cannot abandon it without causing a catastrophic blow to their party, even if it's a losing issue for them now. It's like a knife that's stuck in them. Yeah it's slowly causing them to bleed, but if they just pull the knife out they'll bleed out immediately.

I do think they wildly underestimated how unpopular the stance was though, which to be fair, would have been hard to predict in the decades leading up to now.

I guarantee there are Republicans, especially ones in tight races, who wish that Roe didn't get overturned. It was the perfect carrot on a stick to motivate voters while being far enough away to not scare off other potential Republican voters.

In the long run, probably yes. Especially since gen y and z heavily favor democrats (rightfully so!).

They actually destroy themselves right now.

Sunk cost fallacy

If they dump the anti abortion platform now then a lot of their base would be upset by that

They've got a stranglehold on the incel/4chan community

But as for well adjusted young men, I think they lean more left unless they come from rich families

My home state Idaho will be the big test on passing ballot measure protecting abortion rights in a super red state. This measure only protects women who've either been raped/incest, fetus viability, and the health of the mother. I got to participate in my first ever time being polled last night which focused on this ballot measure. I'm interested to see if there will be tremendous pushback here as well come November as abortion is currently illegal in the state.

It's not going to immediately flip solid red areas, but it will absolutely make purple areas more blue.

Kansas's 3rd District is a good example. Kansas is a pretty Red state. The 3rd District, has always been purple though. It's Representative, Sharice Davids is a Democrat, the state GOP did some real bullshit in re-drawing district lines to split the more blue areas of the district and add more red parts. There was very real fear that this would make it extremely difficult for Davids to get re-elected. Then Kansas had the election about abortion, where the anti-choice camp were soundly beaten. It also made abortion a super prominent issue. Fast forward a few months and Davids gets re-elected by and even bigger margin than last time and now the GOP in Kansas is afraid that they have lost the 3rd forever. And to be clear Davids is not some moderate. She's a Native American lesbian former-MMA fighter. Basically the antithesis of a GOP candidate. Her continued success is a pretty big marker that a purple district is now pretty blue.

You think that most young men from rich families are more right leaning than most young men? Like more likely to be against abortion rights?

The thing is polling shows a majority of republicans favor abortions and not banning them outright. The vocal minority is who want the full out bans. Catering to the vocal minority doesnt seem like a great plan, but it really is all they have. Its not as if they can plan good policy.
