The sidequests suddenly become amazing towards the end. It progresses from bullshit fetch quests to mini holy shit moments full of character development.

That's easy though, just dig under the sandstone beneath the main dune, plop down a torch, and then dig the support block and let it fall.

In this case, I had to hold the X button down for like three seconds.

Go talk to this guy
Now go talk to that guy
Go back and talk to the first guy
Now go to this area to collect something. You'll fight something here.
Come back and talk to the first guy
Now go talk to that second guy

Sometimes it felt like I was spending an hour just doing this. It's not restricted to side quests either.

Like it annoyed me how after every main mission you have to go talk to three seperate people who are standing nowhere near each other just to be told specific things. Why isn't that just one big debriefing cutscene!

There's usually at least some sort of optional dungeon or some unique hook like a murder mystery or puzzle or something. There's literally nothing else outside of going to a specific area to collect something and/or fight a monster/group of enemies.

Those encounters are pretty quick too. Pretty sure I spent more time running to things than actually doing anything in a lot of that content.

It's particularly bad in this one. Lemme sum up what I'm doing right now.

I just came off a big fun story mission with a wonderfully showy boss fight. The immediate next mission was going to talk to a guy. He tells you to go around your HQ and tell three other people about the big boss fight. Then you go back to the first guy who says there's one more person you should tell.

You go tell that person, she's doing a thing that needs parts. She sends you to the blacksmith who says he needs sand. So you go get sand. You take it back to the blacksmith. He tells you to tell the girl you got it. Girl sends you to talk to someone else about the next part. That someone sends you to a different area of the map to fight a monster that's guarding the material they need. Then you come back to the main girl. She doesn't know what material to use for the last part, so you have to go talk to the loremaster. I am still not done with this quest.

And like I said, this is a main story mission. Your HQ is also kind of annoying to navigate, is pretty big, and you don't sprint inside of it.

The problem in FF XVI is that you are talking for 15 minutes in total, running for another 15 minutes in total, only to find the quest item in an area you are already familiar with, and you have to fight 3 minutes against some enemy you are already familiar with.

That's the problem.

If the quest would sent you in some cave or whatever it would be fine, but "that forrest clearing you just passed an hour ago during the main story" is just... ughg.

It's still a great game.

The developers said that the game ended up exactly what they wanted it to be like.

But I seriously can't imagine why they'd want a 'help me build a ship' quest to just be talking to numerous NPC's and not much else. As a main quest too.

It's one of the worst cases of padding I've ever seen. You don't have to think about anything or really engage with anything. It's not like there's anything interesting about the traversal to even make it fun.

Eh, I feel that stuff was pretty prominent in older RPGs, not so much these days.

Still yeah, aside from the lore and fleshing out characters, the actual quest content felt pretty lacking in XVI.

And making menial tasks Main Quests was also very draining too. Not sure why developers keep thinking side-quest material has to be labelled as a main story thing, this is hardly the first time I've seen that happen, lol.

Bro, I legit took a break from the game after this shit. The pace breaking was bad enough. Cant believe that was a main questline.

Xenoblade Chronicles X is the only jrpg Ive played where the sidequests were interesting and engaging.
