It was the result of having multiple pastors tell me, essentially, the same story about quoting the Sermon on the Mount, parenthetically, in their preaching "turn the other cheek" [and] to have someone come up after to say, "Where did you get those liberal talking points?" And what was alarming to me is that in most of these scenarios, when the pastor would say, "I'm literally quoting Jesus Christ," the response would not be, "I apologize." The response would be, "Yes, but that doesn't work anymore. That's weak." And when we get to the point where the teachings of Jesus himself are seen as subversive to us, then we're in a crisis.

Yikes.

Religion is almost never about sincere belief. In the best of cases, it's the result of peer pressure to (at least pretend to) fit in. Often, it's more a convenient way to try and claim authority, by claiming a deity just so happens to want exactly the same values you have. No one (aside from maybe young children who don't know any better) genuinely believes in that crap anymore.

Trying to get an antitheist to take a nuanced look at religion is like asking a Trump supporter to take a nuanced view of the right.

Thinking that almost nobody in religion believes it especially those who dedicate their entire lives to it is a conspiracy theory for foolish teenagers who think they are a hell of a lot smarter than they really are.

And this is coming from someone who doesn't believe in any of the organized religions. Thinking Christianity is stupid is one thing, thinking almost no Christians actually believe anything Jesus of Nazareth was ever ascribed to saying is far stupider than that.
