For Gradius one of the big things to learn is which levels you should use Laser and which you should use Double Shot. The moai stage is at least twice as hard if youre not using Double. And sometimes when you die its more important to rush for an Option than to get some of the other powerups. Source: I 1CCd the arcade version

NES version has some cheats and level skips too if you want, though most of them have unusual criteria to use

Game #13 - Tennis (Nintendo, 1984)
https://gamefaqs.gamespot.com/a/user_image/5/9/0/AAN-f8AAE6Wm.jpg
Final time: 5:07

6-2, 4-6, 6-2

I finally won a game! I'm not sure what was different, I just actually won the deuces I got to instead of losing them like I usually do. I jumped out to a 4-0 or 5-0 lead in the first set and it felt like my time had come, but then I fell down 0-4 in the second set and thought I had fallen back down to earth and was going to lose. I managed to finish strong though and give myself hope for the last set, which was back and forth at 2-2 before I took 4 in a row to finish the job.

As for the game, I kinda hate it. Sometimes my guy just misses the ball like he has a hole in his racket, and sometimes he turns around for no reason right before he hits the ball so it goes way off to the side. Also, I swear Mario has been bribed because every ball close to the line is in for the opponent and out for me. It's better than soccer but that's the highest praise I can give it.

When I first tried Gradius I never got past the parts in the first stage that shoot rocks up at you.

The part I struggled with was a part where some semi large ship comes at you shooting three large rock like things in different directions consistently. They also move towards you at greater speed than yours and can take many hits. Then several of them come in a row.

I beat Super Mario Land 2. It was really good I thought. Now Im playing Super Mario 64 and about 30 stars in. Im at Big Boos Haunt and have yet to do the first Bowser level lol.

I tried getting the through the jet stream star in JRB and I couldnt :( Ive done it before without metal cap but after trying to unsuccessfully for 10 minutes I just said screw it and gave up. Going for 120 stars obviously.

Its not an NSO game obviously but Sunshine will be an interesting one to revisit. I know its reputation is generally less than glowing and I havent played it in about 20 years.

No, Im going to get back to playing other NSO games too. Possibly after 64 and before Sunshine. But the Mario games are short and comforting so they seemed a good way to get back into gaming. Assuming its a while from now, I may play SML2 and 64 again when you and MZero get around to them too.

Good to be back after 1.5 month hiatus of playing nothing.

Ctes has beaten Gradius

So it finally happened. This was probably the game I struggled the most with so far (although that 1 hour of Baseball where I couldn't hit the ball sucked way more). It should be said the time spent is also because I have had some of my most busy weeks here in October and on top of that was put into a mafia game I had signed up for in early August and then forgot about because it didn't happen.

Overall the experience was pretty decent. It's difficult especially before you understand how to go from different abilities. Game is borderline impossible if you get far without good power ups too, this wasn't very clear in-game to me. For it's time it's pretty impressive obviously with a lot of room to improve. Other than some of the crappy sports games that might as well not count, this was my first new experience in this project.

Super Mario Bros
The Legend of Zelda
Baloon Fight
Gradius
Mario Bros
Donkey Kong
Ice Hockey
Ice Climber
Soccer
Tennis
Excitebike
Tecmo Bowl
Baseball

I did play a bit of Metroid yesterday. I have gotten the Ice Beam.

I considered Lost Levels or Ghost n Goblins next though maybe something less challenging would be good after Graidus lol. This is just getting on with the Mario franchise of which there is a lot of things or picking the oldest remaining of the first 20 games on there.

Maybe knocking out Pro Wrestling or something first. Also depends on what you guys feel like.

he's almost finished with the project, and will wrap up all the cartridge releases in a couple weeks.

there's no US/PAL only NES games since it's only covering Japanese famicom games and it's also missing the famicom disc system games (besides ones that got cartridge releases later like Zelda) because he's counting it as a separate system, but he's planning on going back to do a series for all the fds games at a later point.

Game #15 - The Legend of Zelda (Nintendo, 1986)
https://gamefaqs.gamespot.com/a/forum/5/5e37ab2b.jpg
Final time: 7:09

I know a lot of people like this game and even claim it's their favorite in the series. Honestly though I think this game is really, really bad. The open world concept is kind of neat and innovative at the time, but it's terribly designed. Those screens where you get stuck until you do the right combination of screen changes? Absolutely terrible. Who thought those were a good idea? Why isn't there any sort of indication of which walls are bombable or which trees are burnable? I don't like handholding any more than the next guy, but at least something to make you think "hey there's something unusual here" but no, you just have to bomb every wall in the dungeons.

Then there's the enemies. They have no discernible patterns so you just kind of have to guess where they're going, and they don't have attack animations so all they have to do is bump into you to damage you, which sucks. This is especially annoying with those knight guys who you have to hit in the back. If they were at least trying to attack you instead of wandering around aimlessly you can figure out the right time to attack, but they can just turn whenever and hit you.

And what's the deal with Ganon? Why is he invisible? And if you touch him while he's invisible it damages you, which is so dumb. You can kind of tell where is he based on where the fireballs come from, but it's still ridiculous.

I could go on and on, but basically I think this game is kinda cheeks. I'm a big fan of the Zelda series, so I guess the one good thing I can say is that it spawned a great series that gave me a ton of enjoyment... later on.

I think I'll try Gradius and Metroid and then maybe take a break from NES and play some Game Boy or something lol

First Metroid is good by most part but there are some aspects that just don't feel polished enough, promise is definitely there. Fortunately I happen to know that they do get better, at least on SNES.

Super Mario Bros
The Legend of Zelda
Baloon Fight
Metroid
Gradius
Mario Bros
Donkey Kong
Ice Hockey
Ice Climber
Soccer
Tennis
Excitebike
Tecmo Bowl
Baseball

I am unsure about what to do next other than still progressing Pokemon TCG. I might just do Lost Levels and then whatever MZero wants to play on Game Boy after that.

Like if you want to see what it was like back then you could play Atlantis no Nazo or Mighty Bomb Jack. (...Do not play Atlantis no Nazo. Just don't.)

Beat level 3 of Gradius

so far my only major complaint is that enemies can come from behind you. You can't shoot backwards so that seems unfair. Also I was just there 3 seconds ago where did that enemy come from

Sometimes when you go to the top or bottom of the screen to shoot the turrets or collect a powerup, another one will just zoom in from the left side and kill you and it's really frustrating
