Pokmon TCG - So I hastily assembled a mediocre deck full of fire types to fight Nikki, the Grass club master. It worked like a charm, allowing me to solo her 4-0 and end the duel with her having no Pokmon on her bench.

Then came Ronald. I shouldve saved after beating Nikki, but I did not. Perhaps I shouldve just used the rewind option once I realized a duel was starting, but I didnt do that either. I just jumped headfirst into the duel feeling overly confident after my deck crushed Nikki. I sent out Ponyta, Ronald sent out Lapras, and it was just one of those days. I also discovered Charizard and his 100 power attack isnt as great as I initially thought since he requires discarding two energy cards every time you use it, wtf.

I lost. I saw there was a specific card given as the prize for beating this Ronald fight and while I have a sneaking suspicion this wasnt the only time I could get that card, I didnt want to risk it. Nor did I want to give that smug jerk Ronald the satisfaction of beating me. So I begrudgingly loaded my save from before I dueled Nikki and did it again.

She was much tougher this time. She got one of her Venusaurs going and it was quite the close call. I was able to let Ponyta take a bit of a redemption tour by knocking out Nikkis final two Pokmon, including a Venusaur with no energy cards lol.

Then I built a very simple deck of mostly Nidoran M and Nidorino, Krabby and Kingler, corresponding energy cards and my best trainer cards and beat Ronald 3-0. If its not broken dont fix it right? Shout out to the random Pinsir who provided moral support from my bench.

Game #6 - Balloon Fight (Nintendo, 1986)

https://gamefaqs.gamespot.com/a/user_image/3/2/9/AAdlC_AAENXh.jpg

Controlling a character to pop your opponents balloons before they pop yours sounds easy, doesnt it? Dont be fooled by this games simple premise or cute exterior. Underneath these youll find a game with strategy to spare. After mastering the easy-to-learn controls, youll still have to get a grip on the games impressively realistic physics. And if thats not enough, there are still the ever-increasing enemies and environmental hazards like lightning and water. Or try the games second mode, Balloon Trip, if you feel like taking a break from the action and just want to see how long you can stay aloft. And, hey, who doesnt like popping balloons sometimes?

Yeah, this game is fun. Ive never played Joust or any game quite like this. I quite enjoyed getting the hang of the unusual physics to then discover just how tight the gameplay is. Theres something pure about the simplicity here and it makes for an excellent pick up and play title where I could see myself playing for 10 minutes or an hour without getting bored.

It took me maybe half a dozen attempts to clear phase 12, and I only made it to phase 14 before dying on that run. In my final unsuccessful attempt, I died on phase 10. So by no means have I come close to mastering this game. The other game mode, Balloon Trip, requires even more precision than the rest of the game. I tried a couple times but got nowhere near popping even 20 balloons in a row. While we are not counting that for game completion, Im glad to have a good excuse to revisit Balloon Fight whenever the mood strikes me. And like MZero, I also found it very helpful to knock off 2-3 enemies at the very beginning of each phase.

And yeah, my high score was more like a low score.

Got the seventh medal in Pokemon TCG. The Psychic gym leader was such a little turd stalling me out with a Mr. Mime/Alakazam combo, but I was never in any real danger of losing as I had one more card in my draw pile down the stretch. I could have let him draw himself to death, but towards the end I got a sleep to stick on his Mr. Mime to shut down his Pokemon Power, allowing me to take it out. Then I Bill'd into the last card in my deck, a Charizard, evolved my fully loaded Charmeleon, and smoked his Alakazam to collect my last prize card with 0 cards left in my deck. Much more satisfying win!

Street Fighter 6 has been taking up most of my gaming time for the last few days, but I've made it through 3 more Fortresses in TCG2. Water and Fire were straightforward - most of the peons at this point either require you to have only one type of Energy card in your deck or 4 of a certain Pokemon before you can duel them. The Water leader's special rule was that Water Pokemon could Retreat for one fewer card cost, and the Fire leader's was that the Fire weakness to Water is ignored entirely.

With both those Coins in hand, the Fighting Fortress opened up. For some reason, they made this a maze, complete with trapdoors that sent you back to the start and honest-to-God chests with goodies inside like a real RPG. Found both underlings in the maze (fortunately it isn't all that big, or else it would've been a big headache), beat them, and then took down the Leader.

There's not much that's putting up a big fight at this stage. I've switched my main deck to one built around Water, mostly because I've got multiple copies of the full Squirtle line which is better than the Charmander line anyway. I've also got a very annoying special Vaporeon card with an attack that removes Energy Cards from the defender, plus a couple Gyarados cards backing them up. Doesn't seem to be much game left at this point, so hopefully I can just keep rolling.

Game #7 Pokemon Trading Card Game (Nintendo, 1998)
https://gamefaqs.gamespot.com/a/user_image/6/7/8/AAN-f8AAExGO.jpg

Final time: 15:19
Cards: 201/226

Towards the end I crafted a Fire/Psychic deck that I really liked, but I put in Electric-types in place of Fire for the Articuno battle and in place of Psychic for the Dragonite battle. For the rival fight, I put my original deck back together... but forgot to replace the Electric energies with Psychic energies, so my Psychic Pokemon were completely useless. And yet, I somehow won!

I started with a Mr. Mime against his Kangaskhan and had a Charmander on the bench with Charmeleon and Charizard in hand, so I just powered up my Charmander until he was ready to solo. I started by switching his weaker Pokemon in and killing them with Charmeleon, and I almost lost him because I wasnt paying attention to his health, but the coin went my way for one and his Jolteon only got one hit of double kick, keeping me alive with 20 HP. Then I evolved into Charizard and cruised to victory.

Comparing this to the NES games weve played thus far doesnt even really feel fair. I mean, we did jump like 10 years into the future with this game, so it just feels a lot more modern. Also, it has Pokemon which is also a plus! Comparisons aside, I really like this game aside from the coin being a jerk. Its basically just combining two things I already like: Pokemon games and the Pokemon Card Game. The terminology is different and there are no towns or routes, but its basically like fighting 8 gyms, an elite four, and a champion, but instead of Pokemon battles you play the card game. I actually did play the TCG with my friends growing up, so its a good little dose of nostalgia as well. Plus, I started with the OG set (the one that came with a Machamp), so I remember all the cards. I really hope they put the second one up because I dont want to spend $60 on a used copy.

Also, Im going to try to get all the cards, but theres a decent chance I give up before finishing!

Got distracted by a side project (which is pokemon tcg related oddly enough) but hoping to jump back into this this week too.

Aiming to take out a few NES sports games and then maybe jump to Kid Chameleon, decided I won't use the easy shortcut to the end but will almost assuredly be using save states or rewind on it. I remember this game seeming completely impossible as a kid and the '100+ levels!' on the box just made it all the more intimidating.

Pokmon TCG - I had a funny experience at the science club. Which by the way, can we take a moment to talk about how weird it is theres a gym er, excuse me, club not based on a specific type of Pokmon? I dont hate it or anything, but its such an unusual thing to experience in this series. I basically fell off the mainline games after Diamond (I maybe played a couple hours of X) but for all I know this is the only time it has happened in the series.

Anyway, so I breezed through club leader Ricks underlings with little difficulty, still rocking my very basic deck of Nidoran M, Krabby and Pinsir and applicable evolutions. I may be at a point where I have enough cards to build out one of the common deck builds (i.e. haymaker) but I havent checked yet, and I dont feel overly compelled to do so until this game throws something tougher at me. I feel like Im kinda underutilizing this games deck building capability but its not my fault if the simple deck Im rocking is good enough for most of what the game can throw at me.

It took me three tries to beat Rick. The first time around, I only had Krabby in my hand to start and I was given eight energy cards in nine draws. Which was insane. I couldnt get another Pokmon on my bench which is probably a testament to my deck not being balanced enough, but I digress. Second time around, I was rolling to start. I got Pinsir going early and he needs four energy cards for his most powerful move, which does 50 damage. I was in great shape and off to a 3-0 lead. Mewtwo comes out and I had no idea how the move psychic works in this game. Pinsir hadnt taken much damage but I wasnt expecting Mewtwo to deal 50 damage to me in a single turn! So Pinsir went down and I didnt really have the cards to recover from it.

As I said, third time was the charm. I got Nidorino rolling and I swept his team 5-0 before the duel ended early due to him being out of bench pokemon. Funny stuff because if I had known Mewtwo could take my Pinsir out I had a defender card I couldve used to keep him alive.

Imakuni? is what happens when you do drugs kids. I cant even brag about soloing him with a Kingler because the dude confuses his own Pokmon for reasons?

Getting four packs after beating him was a super nice surprise, but my album only went from 170 to 173 lol. Four booster packs, +3, and I am still missing over 50 unique cards! That cant bode well for completion purposes.

Completely unrelated, I just got a mobile ad for the MCU Disney+ series Moon Knight. Mentioning this purely because its weird. Maybe Imakuni? did this.

Game #8 - Excitebike (Nintendo, 1984)
https://gamefaqs.gamespot.com/a/user_image/0/5/4/AAN-f8AAExbu.jpg
Final time: 1:20

I got first place on all five tracks, which is good enough for me. I did the first four with other racers, but for the last track I just played by myself. I did this for two reasons. First, when you collide with another racer, you bail 99% of the time and they just keep riding like nothing happened. They can just change into your lane at will and wipe you out without any risk and it's kind of lame. Second, the other racers don't even matter because other racers will just spawn further down the track, and your placement is determined entirely by your time and not where the other racers are.

As for the game itself, I'm not a huge fan. I don't like the way the crashes work and how sometimes your guy just rolls for days. I even saw my guy roll up and ramp and all the way down the other side, losing like 10 whole seconds. Other than that, I guess it's fine, but I'm not a big racing fan so I was probably never going to really get into it. Running solo is a lot better than playing with CPUs though, and it feels good when you hit a ramp or sequence of ramps perfectly. Mechanically, it's pretty impressive for the time, and I believe the engine it uses for acceleration was later adapted to Super Mario Brothers, so we should thank it for that at least. The controls don't suck, so that's enough to slot it solidly ahead of Ice Climber.

Also, I didn't touch it, but you can design your own tracks. I'm no historian, but I feel like a level designer is pretty impressive for the mid-80's. Does anyone know any other games that have one from this time period?

It released a few years later (1986), but the Master System's "World Grand Prix" was a racing game where you could make your own track. I had some fun with that back in the day.

Also, this is a fun topic, I just have nothing to contribute. Definitely following along though.

Just finished TCG 2, so here's a final somewhat involved update that I'm going to try to keep succinct. Therefore, bullet points!

  • Forgot to mention last time, but the special rule for the Fighting leader was that opponent Pokemon could not resist Fighting-type moves.
  • Taking down the Fighting Fortress opened up the Psychic Fortress and Colorless Altar. I go Psychic first, where for some reason you just have to defeat any 3 out of the 4 available peons to open up the leader, whose special rule is that Energy cards attached to KO'd Pokemon go back to your hand instead of the discard pile. Bad move when the Blastoise cards in my deck have the PKMN Power that lets you attach as many Water cards as you like on your turn.
  • The Colorless Altar is home to my new great nemesis, Seth - not the leader, just another underling. He wants 4 Double Colorless Energy cards in my deck before he'll duel me, and for the first time in the game, I don't have all that I need. Because I'm not insane, I look up which players in the game give you booster packs that can contain those cards and it thankfully doesn't take too long to get the needed stuff. His battle is super annoying in its own right, though, using what I guess is a TCG "stall" team. Lots of high-HP Pokemon with attacks that cause status effects, with as many Energy Removal cards as he can cram in to boot. I'm eventually forced to switch to my Fighting deck to break through, but even that has some problems until I'm able to get a Machamp on the board early that just runs him over. Screw this guy.
  • The Colorless leader didn't have a special rule for whatever reason; he just wanted 4 Meowth cards in my deck. Hilariously, one of those Meowths pretty much won me the duel because he got so unlucky with his card draws.
  • At this point, I've got all the Coins I need to enter GR Castle, where the final boss awaits flanked by two Executives. I discover I can't duel them without having the Legendary cards from the first game, though, so it's back to the first island to face off with the Grand Masters again. They honestly don't put up much of a fight.
  • Executive #1, Clay, has no gimmick - he just wants the 4 Legendary Cards in my deck. Not even really sure what his deck was built around because I kind of just steamrolled him.
  • Executive #2, Allison, had a deck built around Poison, which was annoying but certainly manageable at this point. She chose one of three special rules at random - increased Retreat costs, lowered Resistance for not-very-effective attacks, and one where cards sent to the discard pile are removed from the game completely instead.
  • The final boss, Villardi, didn't do any special rules or requirements at all. His gimmick was just that he would use one of 4 decks at random in a best-two-out-of-three format where the player could also switch decks between games. I won the first two games without issue, so, you know, kind of an underwhelming ending.
Villardi has so much fun dueling us that he realizes the true purity of the trading card game and promises to start playing it the right way instead of stealing people's cards. Yay, happy ending.

Finished up with an album of 308/441 - lots more cards in this one. Fun game - anyone who likes the original would enjoy this one too, I'm sure.

card games are funny as single-player video games, because the systems are too even. Even in some Magic games that gave the computer an overwhelming advantage, you could just try again and again until variance screws them over.

Ya girl's finished Pokmon Trading Card Game! I had Pokmon cards in the era this game came out, and I always wished I'd had someone else to try actually playing the game with, so it was fun being able to do that all these years later.

That said, this game was pretty rudimentary and had some definite problems. The difficulty curve, for instance, is practically nonexistent - once I'd gotten through the first few clubs, I had enough cards in my deck that everything after that was a breeze, as long as I prepped my deck properly. I had no problem at ALL with any of the Grand Masters or Ronald at the end. In fact, it was so egregious that I beat each of those five trainers only using one* Pokemon apiece. I took out Courtney's Fire Pokmon with Poliwhirl, Steve's Electric types with Rhydon, Jack's Ice lineup with (*two) Raichu, Rod's "Dragon" lineup with the always-reliable Nidorino (only got a Nidoking towards the end and never drew it), and Ronald's Pokmon with Kadabra (same as Nidoking with Alakazam).

But yeah, despite the lack of any real difficulty curve, and moments of old-game jank like the inability to set one card in multiple decks making the "multiple decks" functionally useless, I'm glad this topic inspired me to pick this game up; I had a good time with it! Finished with 193/226 cards and a play time of 20:10.

Just to elaborate a bit - I never really been very fond of Excitebike, it's just not my thing. I'm pretty good at not crashing, but tend to lose a lot of speed in series of ramps, and I'm not always entirely sure why. I mean, I'm sure it's a skill thing just not sure about the mechanics. Since I can beat the game without finding out, I won't.

It's not bad like baseball, but it doesn't really have any moments I enjoy either. I appreciate the influence leading to SMB which spoilers will top my current ranking easily, but that's about it.

Hello from the northeastern United States everyone. Specifically we are in Old Orchard Beach, Maine but making the 5ish hour drive today to my dads small, rural hometown of Presque Isle just a few miles south of the Canadian border. I dont know that we will be making it to Acadia which is unfortunate because it looks amazing.

Im eager to resume this project soon and I left off ready to duel for my 6th master medal. Congratulations to all who recently beat a game!

I've finally collected all the cards! I... definitely exploited the system though, lol

So there are some booster packs you can get from the mail on the PC, and if you save before opening them you can reload and get a different pack. So I got to a point where I had two complete sets and like 2 cards missing from Colosseum and Laboratory and just kept reloading my game to get the last couple cards. But eventually I gave up on Lass because it just would not give me that darn card, so I went and fought the Grass leader and got it after a few attempts

In total it took me about 28 hours to get all 226 cards. I am satisfied and ready to move on.

Adventures of Lolo is one I literally beat two months ago and would consider skipping. Good game though!

Adventures of Lolo is supposed to be like a compilation of Eggerland 1 & 2. Kind of separate games.

Beat the Pokemon TCG, though Ronald's last deck gave me a few issues. None of the grandmasters did though.

Final Card Count: 196/226
Final Time: 9:59

I'll likely leave it there. Don't feel like grinding, especially with the backlog I have. Plus, I want to focus more on Baldur's Gate 3 haha.

Congrats mccheyne and to everyone who has beaten a game recently! Im finally home sweet home and I look forward to resuming this either tonight or tomorrow.

I did not make it to Acadia but I thought Portland was a lovely city. Anyone who wants to know more about my trip for whatever reason is welcome to ask, but otherwise I assume were here to talk about games.

I saw Excitebike 64 will be added to NSO soon.

Were finally back in business folks. The dream is alive and well!

First I dealt 120 damage to an innocent, helpless Ponyta with a single hydro pump and it felt good. Then I beat fire club leader Ken in a 5-0 sweep to earn the fire medal. Im now at

Master medals won: 6
Album: 185/226
Play time: 9:43

Remaining medals are lightning and fighting. Hopefully I can knock Pokmon TCG out in the next couple days and I also plan to give Excitebike a try.

On an uncommon personal note it has been 24 hours of bad juju. My employer had mass layoffs (I was not affected), theres a hurricane coming, we had a leaky toilet, clogged A/C and my phone broke, and some other less significant stuff happened, mostly just bizarre and comical (issues boarding a plane, falsely accused of shoplifting at Walmart which got sorted out, and a Zaxbys employee spilled an entire large coke on my lap). I am somehow forgetting things but those are some highlights. Blogfaqs!

I only had a few minutes to play just now. I went to the fire club looking for one of the fighting club leaders lackeys. Instead I found Imakuni. I couldnt resist fighting him to farm cards, but I somehow messed up when I was playing with my decks and went into the duel with a really crappy deck made up of cards I hadnt poached to make my new primary deck. There were no trainer cards but I still beat him 6-2 because lets face it, hes easy. Four packs and I only got one new card, meh.

Did you check out anything south of Portland at all? My fiancee and I are honeymooning up in that general area in just over a month - gonna be mostly in New Hampshire but we're taking at least a brief jog across the border into Maine in the last day or two.

No I did not, but Id love to hear about any cool sites you may see! My wife is from Rhode Island originally and we went last year, mostly hanging around Providence and her hometown of Barrington. I highly recommend trying bakery pizza if you havent.

Ill give a proper update tomorrow but I earned my 7th medal today and have a couple more lackeys to fight before going for the final medal in lightning club.

I'm up to floor 4 on Adventures of Lolo (JP) and things have been kicking up in terms of difficulty. I think there's 5 or 6 floors

I've also played a few games of Tecmo Bowl in anticipation of NFL season starting soon. So far I've won two games and lost... a bunch
