It sounds like both Sega and the devs behind Mania wanted to do something different. I'd rather play an inspired game from devs who are passionate about their work than get some phoned-in sequel cash grab that no one had the desire to make.

And it's not like a sequel is completely out of the realm of possibility. Just that they're not doing it right now.

This is honestly exactly how I'd like video game publishers and developers to operate. Let the devs work on something they are driven to deliver their best on, rather than forcing them to pump out endless sequels to capitalize on what's hot in the moment.

People complain how underwhelming each subsequent Call of Duty or Madden or Ubisoft game is. If they'd let these franchises rest and breathe once in a while we might get better games made

Pretty much. As a franchise, Sonic has largely turned into trying a bunch of random stuff and not paying attention to what sticks. They aren't really in the habit of trying to follow up on successes.

I can kind of agree. As much as it might be nice if Sonic Team stuck to what worked and tried to build on that for the sake of having some predictable quality, if they want to try out a bunch of different things, I'm glad they have that freedom instead of having a bunch of out-of-touch executives demanding that they repeat their successes for as long as they can milk the ideas. In practice, Sonic games will continue to sell well regardless of how many stinkers they drop between gems, so it's not like there won't be user reviews and other feedback available to help guide purchases even if they aren't predictable enough for many consumers to be comfortable buying them blind.

Mania's soundtrack has been in rotation since the game released

Sega themselves hated the fact that a third party dev made a better Sonic than them so yeah it's not surprising.

That's fine, one was enough. It was basically a sonic 1-3 remix as it was.

Shame, Mania was fun. Could have been harder, though.
