The ending

Outside the ending, ESB is probably better than IV. They are both pretty epic. But IV's ending is SO much better. ESB just fizzles out while IV stands on its own as a movie.

ESB by design didn't really have an ending with closure. That's kinda the charm of it.

But yeah, the battle of Yavin excited me so much more as a kid. There's more to be inspired by. It's especially the case when Star Wars is brand new to you (unless you did sum dumb and watched it in the wrong order).

I don't believe that all movies must have a happy ending for the protagonists with full closure of all plot threads

Real life doesn't work that way

It's not about a happy or sad ending.

In ESB's ending nothing really happens. Star Wars IV's ending is exciting.

Episode 4 ending was written so that if there wasn't another one it could stand on it's own, episode 5 was written knowing there'd be another one.

The middle act of a trilogy can't have a self-contained ending.

Rocky II

Once the decision was made to do a sequel, Stallone wanted it to be a trilogy. It just ended up becoming a hexalogy with its own spinoff trilogy. I will concede that winning or losing a title match makes for an easier stopping point than trying to find one in the middle of an ongoing war.
