Seems like most of the hype games now are all single player. I remember when we used to hear that MMOs are the future of gaming but seems like that's not the case?

Maybe the not as populated MMO games is dying down a bit, but final fantasy 14 for damn sure isn't nowhere near close to being dead anytime soon. Same goes for WoW.

Aren't a bunch of them designed so you can go single player if you want?
Plus in general people are less enthusiastic about random interactions online. It's not so new and novel any more.
They constantly get patched too. If you get too attached your reward is the version of the game you like slowly being picked away at by updates.
I'm not surprised people are looking elsewhere.

FF14 will have a new expansion announced soon. New games are hard to break into the genre. But mmos that already currently exist are mostly doing OK or great. Even the small ones usually find a niche to exist in. The only mmo that might eventually die is The Old Republic. It is about to be sold to a new smaller company. And people think the game is about to go on Maintenance Mode, where no more new content is ever created

And China has one coming. I dont remember it's name but I think it's from the company who used to locally handle World of Warcraft, and then they suddenly cut off ties with Blizzard and WoW shut down in China over it. Now we know it's cause they are making a WoW clone, I think on orders from the Chinese government who would rather people play a local game than an American one

Honestly I'm a little tired of games that don't have the courtesy to actually end at some point.

Blue Protocol has some decent hype, even with the bad press this week about Amazon censoring breast sizes and jiggle physics for the western release

Somehow, Mabinogi keeps lurching ever onward.

I seriously miss that game, but I don't have time to play it anymore.

It's definitly not like the late 2000s/early 2010s hype anymore, with two "WoW killers" (haha, no) getting released every year, but MMOs are still a thing.

Not at all. Pretty of MMO's have decently large player base. The older ones like WoW, RuneScape, MapleStory, Ragnarok, etc., aren't as populated as they were in their heyday, but that's a symptom of those games being 15+ years old. Not a sign of the entire genre dying.

What does need to stop though, are the AAA developers making "mmo-lite" games to try and cash in on the profitability of games with long lifespans. They either need to go fully MMO, or stay the hell away from the genre

No.

There is already one MMO that is clearly leagues above others, and MMO fans are already playing it. MMOs arent the kind of genre where you can buy a new game and play it on and off, switch off, whatever. It is a huge time sink and commitment. People arent gonna stop playing Ff14 to play some MMO that will probably not last 6 months.
