So there was "hype" back in the NES days? I wasn't alive then so I have no knowledge of it.

What was Brawl like if you weren't into competitive and somehow avoided spoilers?
I don't care about competitive but I did see the roster, stages and subspace before release.

I'm struggling to remember how widespread the tripping hatred was outside of the loud comp people though.
All I really remember about when I finally got Brawl was that the spoilers and the wait had sapped a lot my excitement and I was well aware that while I was probably going to have fun, a lot of the game's surprises were already out of the bag. I stopped looking at SSBB stuff online so I didn't really catch what the consensus was.

Gaming may not have been as gigantic as it is now, but for nintendo's mario bros. it's popularity has always really been up there. Got a cereal, a weekday cartoon, pick your own adventure books (I own like 3 of them around somewhere or another), and the only real reason people went to see that crappy 1989 movie the wizard was just to get a glimpse at super mario bros. 3 gameplay.

I do know about how Nintendo was a lot more lax with their IP back then. There was even a song written from the perspective of Bowser (not part of a movie like Peaches).

Video game magazines were a big deal back in the day and for me at least were a big builder of hype.

Yep. Nintendo was a little laid back thus how we got stuff like captain N the game master cartoon, but then the really, really bad mario bros. movie in the early 90s caused nintendo to rethink their position with their IP usage. (I unfortunately seen it with the fam when the movie came out on VHS. I think it was 1993 when it released on VHS and I was 10 years old. It really takes a lot of suckage for me to hate a movie at 10 years old, lol).

I actually like their recent successes like detective pikachu and the modern mario bros movie thus they might be easing up a little on their old stance. I'm trying to see a actual smash bros. movie happen one day.

I also agree I enjoyed the hell out of the first part of this remake that I have been looking forward to since the PS3. I was cautious of the 3 game plan at first, but after playing part 1 I am looking forward to the complete experience.

Also with rdr2. Man what a ride that one was.

It was fantastic for casual play.

The no items, fox only, final destination meme came mostly from people hating on brawl. People who just wanted to have fun had lots of fun.

Everyone hated tripping though, but overall a small blemish in an otherwise perfect game. The only thing holding ultimate back is lack of SSE or equivalent. World of Light doesn't really cut it it's just a super fancy event stadium.

Yeah I admit when it came to having fun my brother and my two nephews played the hell out of brawl. (Had like, 600 hours or something like that logged into the game when its all said and done). We all definitely hated tripping, but when it happened it was more like 3 seconds of anger and then about 6 more laughing about it since we most likely just got KO'd for it, lol.

Surprisingly we never quite noticed just how busted meta knight was.

It definitely did for me. One of my gaming sins is that I actually never finished any original version of resident evil 4 despite owning the game on various consoles. (I got the wii version, a 360 version, a PS3 version, and a PS4 version. Each time I tried to beat the game but ended up getting distracted by something or another, lol). RE4 remake comes out and finally gives me a reason to sit down and finish it up since I wasn't playing anything when it released. Game was awesome.

RE2 remake lived up to the excitement when it comes to the general gameplay. The only single two things I wish it did was keep the original A and B scenario system and not remove any of the monsters like giant spiders and crows.

Halo 3. That was some good shit.

If you get even slightly into Brawl, matches quickly get degenerate. Chain grabs, throw released, infinites, dacus, and just broken moves - stuff that requires little to no practice but let's you dominate your friends. You can say it's the good kind of broken, because it can be fun, but if you keep going and get better it starts getting even worse.

Aside from Halo 3, one of the few insstances that really came after the internet, and thus major hype engines started really hyping things so hype that everything and its uncle got super-hyper-over-hyped...

WoW Mists of Pandaria. Hyped. and people hated it before even trying. Still basically the best expansion after frozen throne, and the last time it tried to be fun in a new way.

If we include minor little things with minor hypes, I would say Monster Train ended up living up to being a good Slay The Spire take.

FF7 and FF7 remake

To be honest, monster hunter world was something I absolutely loved like 3 times more than every monster hunter game I played before it. (My first monster hunter was freedom unite on the psp, but I also put a good bit of hours into tri, 3 ultimate, 4 ultimate, and a little bit of generations).

World not only had a huge marketing campaign, but when the game actually released and I got to play it, the gameplay to me is just amazing in practically everyway compared to all the older entries. The only two complains I had was more about the weapon designs and that majority of the monster types in base game was just wyverns/flying wyverns. (It is true that base world had a bunch of basic looking weapons with most of them having basic monster parts slapped on that same iron or bone base design)
