Still a no from me. Ive experienced somebody breaking into my home while I was there twice, and on neither occasion did I wish I had a gun.

Not yet, but I've been considering getting one and this pushed me to do that sooner rather than later.

We live in a pretty safe area, but last night it took the cops around 20 minutes to get here. I'd feel much safer knowing that if shit suddenly hits the fan I can protect myself.

A 150$ 12-guage pump is all one really needs for the home.

We have two big, really loud, really protective dogs. I really think their noise keeps people away from my door, not just those with an eye toward crime but solicitors too. I have seen people wanting to sell stuff pass by as my dogs throw themselves against the door.

I am glad the night passed without further incident, TC.

Same, and they were someone I knew. I knew they were not a threat. They thought I wasnt home. Came right up to the window and tried to open it. I had cameras but if there was a problem I could easy get access to a gun. Luckily I kept my windows locked so his attempt was in vain. So to the TC it might be a similar thing. Someone you know

That is what I think. Not only are my German Shepard dogs a fantastic deterrent, but I love those two knuckleheads.

And.I would be more likely to shoot my own foot with a gun in a crisis than to use it productively.

I've been in that situation. A guy was trying his key in the lock and knocking on the door. I had the chain on and by looking through the peephole I could see he wasn't bigger than me and was unarmed. I opened it up, keeping the chain on and he just was drunk and had the wrong apartment number.

I've also been in a situation where a stranger was knocking on my door at midnight. I looked out saw it was one guy and opened up. He had been at a party down the street and got in and argument with someone and had been stabbed with a screw driver. He wanted me to call an ambulance and he said he would stay on the porch. I saw the guys he was arguing with were on the street shouting at him. I told him to come inside then grabbed him by the shirt and yanked him inside before he could say no and called 911.

No gun needed.

Question to you or anyone who knows, would a shotgun or a handgun be better given that there are houses pretty close alongside ours and across the street? My only real concern with a gun is the risk of stray bullets.

my roomate used to leave the front door unlocked even when she was home alone all day. we do live in a suburb with a pretty low crime rate(pretty low as in if you go 5 miles in the other direction it's "high", but mine is one of the lowest in the state), but I managed to convince her that this was absolutely insane. neither of us owns a gun and she has no easy access to a weapon. there's just no reason at all to leave your door unlocked to let someone come in even if you're living in the safest place ever

yeah what? shotguns are bad for home defense because they're slow, not because they aren't powerful. you're better off with a handgun or AR15.

unless you're buying a semi auto combat shotgun in which case..you could buy an AR15 anyway

I'm dead serious. In my state that's perfectly acceptable. Where I live there's basically no way someone "accidentally" tried the wrong house. And if they try once, they'll try again.

We've had problems in my area with men paying women online for "action" and being given fake addresses. The men show up at some random person's house at night which leads to cops and frightened homeowners.

I would have gone outside so fast. I'm not scared of them. I'm a beefy guy but I've been itching to try my laser pointer pepper spray.

For real though a shotgun is a bad choice for home.defense compared to a pistol.

I always recommend something like a VP9 with a good flashlight. And most importantly get some training and a lot of trigger time.
