It has been the plan since the beginning to try and put all of these together into one super-bill because none of them are popular. Originally, the plan was to have a "think of the children" week or something and pass them then, but now it seems Congress wants to stick them all into something that needs to pass for different reasons. The article doesn't mention which, which I admit is a weakness, but it frankly might be the cases that sources are telling the EFF that Congress doesn't particularly care which bill gets these passed.

And in any case, if you haven't heard of one or more of these bills, now would be a great time to know they exist because everyone is evil and the government means to pass as many as they can despite all objections.

Which ones do you think are good, and why? Every single one of these has a pervasive theme of surveillance and internet censorship, and they are trying to pass them as a group in no small part because none can pass alone, and because it means government control of the internet will increase even if some of them don't survive legal challenges.

As out of hand as the internet is and how badly it's negatively impacted mental health, culture and even society it probably does need some sort of regulation that isn't going to be immediately popular. If it ever is. But better for humanity and society in the long run.

It ain't any of that shit, though.

Eventually they'll find a way or just force it no matter how much harm it does.

The Tories keep trying in the UK despite their attempts at similar laws collapsing repeatedly when they have no way or companies willing to implement it.

Big companies can't ignore the US government the way they can ignore Australia or the UK. They can't threaten to leave or take their business elsewhere. Companies already bend the knee to three letter agencies for secret spying. These bills will take away the rest of online privacy and secret communications, restrict who can access what (under the guise of protecting children from objectionable content), and even what content can appear on the internet. This is a huge deal.

If any of you still haven't contacted your representatives yet, please do so. If you don't believe the things I'm saying, please check out the EFF and read about these bills and who is against them. And if that still isn't enough, check out the text of the bills themselves. This is bad, and it's worrying that they are trying to pass them all at once without serious scrutiny, especially when the public by and large wants none of it.

I like how the URL says "you can help stop these bad bills"

No, you can't. If the government and the corporations want the bill to pass, it'll pass. One way or another.

This isn't a democracy. Average citizens have no power here.

EARN IT is on like it's third try. Bad bills have been defeated before, and they can be defeated again. None of us can force Congress to act in a certain way, but taking about these issues and applying pressure is not nothing. Not every company, government agency, or member of Congress will be in favor of these bills either.

True, but only temporarily. We may be able to stall, but the money will grow and grow until it flips more and more of those companies, agencies, and congresspeople.

Best we can hope for is to stall for a few years.
