I think it's an odd one.
You get 5 entire characters but you only get -4 levels to split between all of them. You get some decently fun bosses, but you gotta refight them three times except for the one you'd want to fight three times.

I find DMC4 a lot easier to sit down and play start to finish than any of the others for some reason. It's comfy. Unless you play it too many times back to back, gets stale fast.

Backtracking sucks

The main thing I like about it is how easy Nero is to play, since his charged shot lvl 3 was so grossly powerful, so as long as you charged it during his melee attacks and used it whenever possible he had a really easy time with everything.

DMC4 Nero was great.
Charge Shot 3 was busted, Buster grabs had impact to them, that air-stinger -> max act + jump cancel -> repeat thing was awesome.

Backtracking sucks

How much does it suck? They give you a whole other character who gets all his styles taped together and can do DRI at least.

It's a fun game, entertaining but basic story, generally I liked it a lot. Backtracking is kinda lame, but it is what it is.

It's good. But I love DMC1 so much that when I play it, it just makes me wish to be playing that instead

Some of the best minute to minute gameplay in an action game. Story is downright silly and Kyrie does nothing but SE added 3 more really damn fun characters.

Backtracking is lame but it's in service of more diverse gameplay so I'm not super worried.

Kyrie has a great ass

I like what they did with the story.
Dante witnesses a bunch of crazy people doing their thing and gives them a few nudges.

Dante in 4 might be the coolest version of Dante. He is all smiles and chuckles. Except when he is all guard flying and distortion exploits.
I never skip the part halfway through the game where he dodges Nero's katana thrust and pushes him over.

I wish there was a faster way to refight Credo and Dante in the game.

I'd say they could do that DMC3 mission 18 thing again but because of how character switching works in this game, that'd still only mean quick access for 3/5 characters.

Oh I got another substantial grievance.
That meter Pandora has. Have you ever filled that thing just by playing normally?

I messed around with the super characters and it's awesome having that meter on hand for the gunslinger moves. Gilgamesh triple jump -> infinite DT gunship might be the strongest thing in all of DMC4.

That meter should had gotten some kind of boost. Naturally fills faster, slow auto fill in DT, big chunk of meter every time you get a kill with Pandora. Something.
Really cool weapon regardless though.

Also I think it's messed up Trish and Lady can't unlock infinite DT.

It's super wack that Nero gets Yamato with only like two stages left to use it (Outside Bloody Palace)

This is probably the only real downside to it. Other than that its really fun and a whole lot of replayability due to how different the extra 3 characters are.

I don't like playing as Nero, one of the big draws of DMC is the new weapons you get from bosses and Nero only ever gets one

I need more power!

The gameplay is fucking great. The campaign isn't. The real value in DMC4SE comes from the Bloody Palace mode.

Are we thinking about the same thing?
Nero gets Yamato (And his DT with it) pretty early after he beats up Agnus' evil glass wall.
He loses it when Dante takes over around mission 11. Dante gets it back for him.

Getting weapons and abilities late that you're supposed to take into BP/playthroughs on higher difficulties is kind of a thing for this whole series. The Dante boss in this one even uses the unlocked weapons in later playthroughs.
Judging these games after a single playthrough is highly chuckle-worthy.

It's one of the best "blatantly unfinished" games of all time

A maxed out Dante's not gonna get anything new but that's still fun.

Even if they don't add new weapons, I think an all-in-one with unique grab attacks, an air stinger, a long reach grapple, max-act and a unique DT is a pretty good deal.

Isn't Agnus's Wall like Mission 6? Wall - Jungle - Tower - Dante?

I've put probably 80-90 hours into DMC4 on the 360, haven't played much SE though.

It is, secret underground passage in the castle just before he leaves for the forest.
You have Yamato and DT for Echidna, Credo, Agnus, Sanctus and the levels in between
