imo no. I forgot about quicksaving not being a thing in classic games, played a couple of hours, got ganked, totally lost all progress. It was something dumb, too, like I reached a town and they told me to put my weapon away and I thought I did, but... I didn't, and the guards got me.

Second one was rough too from what I remember, if that's the one where you start in a sort of temple fighting radroaches. Combat sucked and I could barely consistently get out of there.

It might be a good idea to skip the first one unless you like a countdown timer on the main quest that's game over when it's 0.

I played Fallout 1 up through the BoS and got to the Super Mutants and that's where I stopped playing.

Mechanically the game just isn't all that fun. It was interesting and worked well for the time but it's definitely a relic of its time.

You may be better off watching gameplay of it and seeing if any of it appeals to you.

If you thought the OG Baldur's Gate games were clunky and inaccessible, the OG Fallout 1 and 2 are far worse.

The Baldur's Gate games at least had some beautiful 2D rendered artwork and character models that felt immersive at least, the old Fallout games are pretty chunky and drab on top of the deep RPG mechanical systems and difficulty.

I have a recommendation if you want to dip your toes into the old-style CRPG genre:

Shadowrun: Dragonfall

Nice atmosphere, a more modern game with a lot of QOL improvements, and Dragonfall has a nice story that's easy to play through to the end while allowing you a lot of freedom to create your player character and interact with your crew.

The controls are a bit clunky, but it's a turn-based game, so it's not like you're trying to figure them out in the middle of some high octane fight. Once I learned how to use them, I didn't have any issue. It's just kind of a menu-based game. I haven't played Baldur's Gate to compare though. These are the controls the game gives you:

Combat controls aside, the actual RPG aspect of it is still extremely solid.

Autosaving, I think you mean. Fallout has quicksaving.

And while there is a time limit, it isn't going to be something you're hitting unless you're really, really fucking around. And even in that case, there is one thing you can do to extend the timer by another hundred days.

Oh yes, I did mean autosaving, thanks. Because I took that for granted as a feature in games, I did not *quick*save and lost whatever progress I had made since starting the game -_-

I'd put Hong Kong over Dragonfall but it's a solid choice.

I got kinda bored midway through Hong Kong, maybe i was just burnt out having played DragonFall not too long before since I bought them close together on a steam sale.

The Shadowrun combat is pretty much XCOM combat though.

You say that like it's a bad thing?

Actually it's a bit looser and more forgiving.

I can't play them anymore because they don't work on my PC. I think there is something I need to do with my PC to let it play older games or something? No idea why, but I can't play them

GOG usually modernizes the games on their storefront to run on modern PCs.

Wasteland 2/3 are recommended too

Haven't played 3, but I enjoyed 2 a great deal.

The original Divine Divinity is pretty good as well, it's an isometric CRPG with a sprinkle of Diablo and Ultima.

Yeah, I don't remember what exactly happens. And they used to work. Maybe I tried to mod 'em? It's been a long time now

I still find Fallout 2 to be very enjoyable (after the slow-ass start of course). Almost every playthrough I notice a few details I never noticed before that are clever/interesting/hilarious.
Aside from the fact it's already a huge game with so much to do in itself, Killap's Restoration Mod also adds great replay value and offers a whole new gameplay experience to F2. Definitely play it vanilla on your first few times though (albeit with patched with Killap's Unofficial Patch).
