Just to get people interested in actually clicking the link, the article features several independent blurbs from academics discussing different issues and directions about academic publishing. It's a nice little anthology that covers a lot of issues. The paywall issue is actually a fairly minor one imo, but comes up first in the article.

Higher education in general was designed for the upper class. I've found that people part of that upper class are almost entirely unaware of the issues.

Even when it comes to evaluation of peer review. Bunch of people who get papers shuttled in with the benefit of the doubt due to prestige often can't see the flaws in the system, because it seems to work for them (do good work, get it published in good places, doesn't it work that way for everyone?).
