Basically. Streaming has upended the entire business model for TV/movies and contracts have absolutely not kept up. So both writers and actors are trying to get aligned with it. Particularly in regards to residuals, which for most actors/writers are how they can afford to even live.

The average SAG actor makes like $68k a year, which isn't a ton for the market high cost of living areas they live in. That average is also inflated by small minority of millionaires so the number is below $68k for a most the members.

And if you don't want the actors/writers striking for more money? Who do you want the money to go?

Setting aside the large group of people between A-listers and extras, the producers want to screw over the extras too

I'm not 100% on this but I think anyone with a speaking role has to be a guild member, extras do not if they don't have lines.

If I remember the story correctly, the "THINK FAST MALKOVICH!" guy from Being John Malkovich created the line on the spot and the production loved it enough that he ended up getting guild membership so they could use the line.

Looking it up, you're absolutely right. I also stumbled upon this extra's funny story.

I was an extra in Jurassic World not in a restaurant but in the legal office. Its the back of my head and I think Im in it for two seconds, but it took a whole day to film. As others have said, you have to move your mouth and make no noise. I wanted something that would look like I was making conversation, and something that would give me the opportunity to occasionally nod or shake my head no.
So I silently mouthed the words to Baby Got Back. Intro included.
Next time you watch Jurassic World, if you catch my split-second appearance, know that Im pretending to say, So Cosmo says youre fat/well, I aint down with that.

It's more that the working class always gets screwed in this country, so it's really hard to feel sympathy for anyone in Hollywood right now. Like for example, one company in Walmart decided to drastically reduce most pay nationally and go back to pre-Covid rates. No stories on that ever mentioned, and it effects so many more Americans.

So saw a break down on reddit for some of the sticking points

The main sticking points for actors (SAG-AFTRA):
  • residuals for streaming based on viewership
  • AI regulations (as well as not using it to recreate an actor's likeness after the fact)
  • regulations against/addressing self tapes. They want auditions to be in person again (this is actually a major point that most people outside of the industry aren't talking about)
Main sticking points for writers (WGA):
  • residuals for streaming based on viewership (overlap w/ SAG)
  • AI regulations. No AI in the script writing process (some overlap w/ SAG. Same overall issue, but different specifics, meaning different language in each contract)
  • "Preserving the writers room". That's how it was written in the WGA pattern of demands and this might actually be the biggest sticking point for the WGA. The two major parts are:
  1. breaking up mini-rooms that stop new writers from breaking in and seasoned writers from moving up
  2. lengthening the contract length to ensure that screenwriting does not continue down the path to a gig economy
What the studios want (AMPTP):
  • obviously, none of the above
  • for the tech companies, and likely the biggest sticking point in all, is the residuals on viewership. This would require them to release their viewership numbers which they have vehemently refused to do, likely because it gives some insight into a not as successful business model as their other metrics have suggested
  • regarding AI: they do not want this off the table in perpetuity. They see the opportunity to cut out labor and desperately want to protect the chance to do so

The struggles of one working class does not mean we should disregard the struggles of another just because we think they are better off. If anything we should be rooting for successful union action to help continually aid in public perception. We should be better than crabs trying to escape a bucket.
