The visuals and fights are really good, but the dialogue is kinda....cheesy?

I dug it though. Great cyberpunk stuff.

Still kind of hoping the movie gets a sequel, although I don't know that James Cameron will get roped back into it.

Movie was decent but mostly forgettable. I saw it on premiere night and I don't really remember much other than her love interest being shit and the action scenes being pretty cool.

They didn't do much weird (afraid of what the audiences would think), but they did a little.

So anime?

Cheesy in a "Cringy Hollywood dialogue" way, not cheesy in an "over-the-top, melodramatic anime" way.

You'll have to be more specific.

I found it really weird how they made a big deal about putting the love interest in a cyborg body to save his life, only to end up killing him off like 5 minutes later lol

James Cameron did it because he loved the series. He will probably have to fund it himself though.

The movie's dialogue often feels like the first draft of a YA novel

It's a comic book for young adults.

It's not the comic book-esque dialogue that bothers me. It's the forced romantic dialogue between the two leads really.

I own the manga, it's one of my favourite series. The movie was about what we could expect - decent at best. But the manga is so much better. If you have the chance to read it, I highly recommend it.

I thought it was fantastic when I saw it, so much emotion in it with some great battles and an exploration of how that world operates.

Though I gotta say, that slow-motion of her love interest dying is way more unintentionally funny than it has any business being.

James Cameron had been developing the movie ever since he finished making Titanic. He was waiting for movie making technology to catch up to his vision, but then he got sidetracked by making Avatar. Then when it became clear that he would be taking too long making the Avatar sequels, he handed off directing duties to Robert Rodriguez, since he didn't want Alita to never get made if he wasn't going to do it.

They still used Cameron's screenplay for the movie, and he stayed on as producer. As much as I like and appreciate the movie as it is, I do dream about how much better and more badass it could've been if Cameron actually directed it himself.

I think I heard from behind the scenes that they also used the same technology for the CGI that they used for Avatar, which was why the CGI looked great.

But yeah the movie is a real mess when it comes to it's script and dialogue. It tried to mix in all kinds of stuff from the source material while not really meshing them well. The action scenes were fantastic though and it's a movie I'm hoping gets a sequel.

Only thing I didn't like was that the ending felt rushed. I thought it was over after the big race thing. But then the whole climbing the cable happened and that felt like it was setting up for another huge arc then it kind of ended.

that's not really official since they're still just "talking about it" and i'll believe it when at least some type of production is going on.
