yeah, they'd break every bone in your body, make a public spectacle of it, then leave the person out somewhere for days to be eaten by birds or insects or dogs, whatever. the term 'coup de grace' came from the act of performing a merciful finishing blow so they would die faster if they didn't deserve to be punished too much

The epistle to Dr Arbuthbnot was a letter from Alexander Pope to a guy named Arbuthnot. To "break upon a wheel" means to break somebody's femurs by stretching their legs on a type of wheel, it was a torture method. Pope used the idea of using a breaking wheel to kill a butterfly as going through way too much effort to accomplish something trivial.
