Not that kind of strange.

Anyway, on one hand I get it. It's scary. Voices, faces, actions, pictures, video can all be extremely scary concepts.

I was reading an article today about a VA getting frustrated with their voice being used in a thing, and asked for it to be removed. I get it. But then a VA asked, as a rhetorical question, 'how would you feel if someone did this to you?'

And honestly, I wouldn't care. I'd probably laugh if it was funny enough. Maybe if I was a VA, I'd care more, but honestly...idk, it's strange. I don't care too much about it being used in regards to me, so I don't see why a meme video would be that scary. It wasn't malicious.

But I get it at the same time, I get the fear and how scary it is, and the threat to their jobs it could present.

Anyone else just find AI stuff far too weird and strange?

I mean you basically already completed the thought.

The more your own life and livelihood are tied to the Internet, the more you have to fear from AI tools being used to abuse that.

Many VAs have a considerable online presence and recordings of their voice are found everywhere.

And I certainly empathize.

Someone walks up to me and tells me my entire method of paying my bills for almost a decade can and will likely be usurped by AI, and the trail is starting to form, yeah, I'm going to be pissed.

People can and are already using AI to spread absolutely cavernous amounts of disinformation. Today it's Vegeta singing Ed Sheeran. Tomorrow it's scammers using your child's voice to extort money out of you.

AI has to be regulated soon because, like all technology, it is growing at a substantially faster rate than anyone can reasonably navigate.

Excited. I've been waiting for this to happen to bring a breakthrough in gaming for over a decade. Also waiting on genuinely useful AI assistants that can follow basic instructions.

There's gonna be consequences, sure. Maybe end of society consequences. But whatever. I'll enjoy it until then.

I try not to think about it too much, because it's possibly the only thing outside of climate change that fills me with genuine existential / dystopian dread.

If you have your job taken by tech/ai that definitely sucks and I feel bad for the individual, but that isn't a reason to stop technological advancements. Would be cool if our geriatric lawmakers/judges protected people's likenesses from AI copycats though.

The big thing with AI is, it's so fast and so sudden.

You only have to go a year , maybe two, into the past, and people would have told you that this is something that no one has to worry, and that there is no way that a computer is going to do any creative work at all.

I mean, take a look at how long we have vocaloids like Hatsune Miku out there singing stuff, and how many people cared about that.

But suddenly, everyone is able to produce such stuff in somewhat decent quality.

And with "somewhat decent", I mean "better than stuff that some professionals try to sell you".

It went from "our job is secure, there will always be demand" to "our whole industry is doomed" within a few months.

I have a feeling they will regulate AI. No way they let it use peoples likeness without permission.

I agree with all the hopes and fears mentioned above. I think the technology in the long run is a good thing. But it is like nuclear technology, where it could revolutionize our society in ways we could never imagine or it could destroy us.

Take the concept creating a person's likeness; the fear I have there is how casual people are when they talk about it, like it's no big deal. I remember years before even things like ChapGPT were real, there was speculation online gaming where the system could have a bot log on as a real player and other players would not know it was a bot.... and my question was, 'why make that a feature AT ALL.' And what was troubling was how the people who were saying they were okay with it, could not give me a reason why it was a good thing. Either you KNOW it's fake in which case what's the point, just have the bot announce it is a AI player, or YOU don't know and it is fraud.

No one can give a good reason to do it, no one thinks about the possible ways it could be harmful... but everyone is in a rush to be the first one to get it done.

AI tech is very much this. Let's do a thing, and then see if it was a good idea to said thing after the fact.

Hopefully there will be meaningful regulations to AI, but without question it will be after a ton of damage is done and lives are ruined.

I think, for once, we're past this now with recent AI developments. They're not ready to replace humans outright just yet, but they're adequate substitutes in some areas already. That image needs an update.
