Mark Zuckerbergs Twitter-killer Threads has reached 70m sign ups in less than 48 hours, as it more than doubled its growth from its first day on app stores.

The new microblogging platform was launched in 100 countries this week . It immediately accumulated significant numbers of users, hitting more than 30 million within its first 24 hours, apparently making it the fastest downloaded app ever. On Friday, however, Zuckerberg announced on his Threads account that the user total had more than doubled that figure.

70 million sign ups on Threads as of this morning. Way beyond our expectations, he wrote. Threads launched around the world at 7pm EST in the US on Wednesday.

Elon Musks Twitter has reacted to the new rival with a formal threat to sue the copycat app over alleged violation of its intellectual property rights.

Threads is freely available and is linked to Instagram, with new sign ups needing an Instagram account to log in. They are then able to transfer over the accounts they follow on Instagram to their Threads account, in a move that has helped boost the size of the new social network.

The goal is to keep it friendly as it expands. I think its possible and will ultimately be the key to its success, he wrote on his Threads account. Thats one reason why Twitter never succeeded as much as I think it should have, and we want to do it differently.

In a further thread, he added: We are definitely focusing on kindness and making this a friendly place.

The Stanford Internet Observatory (SIO), which monitors content on social media platforms, said Threads could succeed as an alternative to Twitters vitriolic arena.

Sadly this. Threads forbids topics involving news, politics, and adult content. At the same, they have no problem helping spread right-wing and transphobic propaganda.

I don't plan on joining, however I thoroughly enjoy how pissed off Musk is over it. He made this situation when he fucked up Twitter to a point nobody thought possible.

tbh.......yeah this is one of the times where it's legit both sides. It's either expanding Zuckerberg's monopoly on social media, or endorsing Elon's horrendous handling of twitter

I quiet quit FB around 2010, I'm in no rush to give Zuck my life's data again.

Twitter's worst change has been f'ing ads every other message.

So you're not aware that currently regular users can only view 600 posts and Verified users get to view 6000 a day?

Or that they allow anti-transgender speech, yet made "cis" a moddable offense?

I spend basically all my free time scrolling Twitter: this may have been put in place briefly while they put out some self-started fire but I haven't encountered any rate limit issues since last weekend.

Musk described it as a policy because he wanted people to think he's making choices rather than flailing.

Musk and Twitter are doing the same thing in the full capacity they are able to only impeded by inferior collection methodology and structural incompetence.

You get the bonus of sticking it to Musk for being a reactionary bigot and a charlatan.

The main issue with Threads is that when I run out of posts from people I follow (which happens often because the people I'd want to follow are mostly still Tweeting) it just puts posts from Youtubers and brands in my feed. And boy do I not want to see those.

Well, it's good if it was just at temporary thing, however it doesn't make sense for it to be temporary since the reason he claimed they enacted it was to stop AI bots from stealing examples of conversation for AI to use for itself. I don't think that's something that would go away with a weekend of limitation.

Unless they all hopped over to Threads lol

He was making shit up, is the thing. The leading theory is that the site was DDOSing itself

Ah I see, interesting.

Yes, Musk does make shit up, however he wasn't the only one talking about it (I think Reddit and another was also, about how "data shouldn't just be freely available for AI to use), just that Musk was the only one to "take action", as they claimed they were doing.

So I guess he at least found a good time to do it because the news on the BBC were the ones who gave me this info, so even they were making the connection between him and other websites trying to prevent "scrumming".
