Can't speak for vegy, but for me it was the power of friendship!

As in "I wanted to share the passion my best friend has for One Piece and managed to sit through 500+ episodes of the worst paced show in existence until something finally broke inside me."

Irrelevant. I run into modern dubs every time I search for a clip of one of my favorite moments on YouTube, and they sound as awful as they always have. You can have the best voice actors in the business, who will sound fine in DC animated stuff or whatever, and in anime dubs they suddenly overact themselves into a prolapse, so I blame the directors. Dubs also tend to alter the translation to try and make the spoken words more closely match the Japanese mouth movements, and this is bad.

Meanwhile, seiyu are amazing, as youd expect when its one of the highest paid jobs you can have in Japan (as opposed to over here, where voice actors are paid a pittance compared to live actors).

I started re-watching da series in dub last year, it was a hella fun ride. I was surprised dey were dis close to da current sub, dey must have been told to hurry da fuck up cause we in da final saga in da manga lol

I don't see the point of subs, honestly.
The manga already exists and it is way better paced.
People in the cartoon literally stops mid-air just so everyone and their dog can get a reaction shot.

Tbh... This. It's fine if you prefer sub, but it's weird how many people try to shit talk someone for preferring to watch things in a language that actual understand and can really pick up tone.

Just read the comic, it's less time consuming.

Season 3 onward is still subbed only. Waiting for it to all be dubbed.

It was on the Funimation site. Now that they're the same company, they've been migrating all of the Funi stuff to Crunchyroll so it's all in one place. This was probably the last big show they needed to do. Probably took so long because it's like 1000 episodes

I dont deal well with the black and white nature of manga, as I was born legally blind and its hard for me to tell whats going on. The only times Ive done it is when I was caught up to the anime and couldnt wait to see how a fight ended.

Im aware One Piece has an unofficial colorized manga, but at this point it would be more of a time sink to start over than to catch up with the anime.

I do follow chapter reviews though, so I know whats going on.

Emotions are cringe.

Honestly though, I believe anime would have a lot more acceptable mainstream appeal
if they cut back on all the screaming and yelling. Hard to top Akira in that aspect regardless.

I can't watch the One Piece dub in its modern form. I grew up with nasal-Sanji and I can't deal with the existence of Trunks Sanji.

and even English subtitles don't even translate well if you aren't a Native speaker who also is super familiar with Japanese culture. Why can't they just pretend they understand Japanese which is why they can understand what characters are saying in dubs? :)

why don't sub purists watch the Italian dub of Jojo when it comes to Part 5?

I used to be really ok with dubs when I was younger and I guess really didn't have a choice. Then Naruto took a break and I was super into it coming back (I think Shippudden was starting), and I didn't wanna wait for dubs so I just started watching subbed. After getting used to subs, their English voices make me cringe now.

Since then I usually prefer subs for most things, though there are exceptions such as Saiki K and Ghost Stories, which are better dubbed for different reasons.

There are also anime with dubbed versions so ingrained into my being that I'll never give the subbed a chance, things like Trigun, Cowboy Bebop, Inuyasha (though I think I watched the newest/final season subbed, I did prefer the old dub), YuYu Hakusho. Also, not a huge fan of DBZ Japanese voices. I hated watching Super in Japanese. Goku, Gohan, and Goten all being the same elderly woman who makes no effort to give any of them distinction is a big wtf.
