I am worried that it may spontaneously catch fire, or else explode. Is this a rational fear to have?

Was going to say this. It turns on, heats up for a bit to keep the whole thing warm, then shuts off when it gets too hot so it doesn't burn.

Unless it's like clicking every few seconds or something, in which case yes something might be wrong.

It's probably just the solenoid that turns the heating elements on.
