Now that Nintendo has dropped both Pikmin games originally for the GameCube on Switch, it's apparent that they changed some Treasures that had real world branding, like Duracell batteries, to more generic brands that don't exist. It's a curious thing considering the previous ports to the Wii didn't have these changes. Do you guys thing it has something to do with licenses running out? Maybe it was too expensive or cumbersome to ask for those licenses again? I personally miss the charm of the original Treasures since it tied into the lore of the Pikmin franchise, but that's just me. What do you think? Let me know!

On a tangentially related note, I also think it's weird they changed the Wollywog, Yellow Wollywog, and Wogpole enemies to the PAL names of Wollyhop, Yellow Wollyhop, and Wolpole in the American release since that wasn't a problem for the original releases or even the Wii ports before now even though it was a well known change exclusively to the PAL versions. I know why they changed it and it was probably easier to just release the same versions everywhere, but I wonder if the PAL regions got proper releases reflecting their Treasure differences like in the originals. It's just inconsistent in my opinion.

Thanks! Working full-time is demanding so sometimes I just don't have the energy to be super active on the boards. I also sometimes struggle with good topic ideas. This one seemed current enough to garner a good response, though!

Dont like it, I thought it was cool that they used actual brands, definitely gave it that real-world connection.

Not worth having a meltdown over though lol and if I absolutely need to see the brands while playing, I can always play the OG GameCube version or the Wii version lol

I find it a little more charming in retrospect, but when I first learned they used real products in Pikmin 2 it really put me off because I find the practice generally distasteful. Especially stuff for children.

But I swear I saw there was a drama about some mod host site banning mods that would revert the changes in the re-release to 'respect the dev vision'. Which seemed weird because the point of mods surely is to not do that, especially console mods.

I agree with you there! It's important to the lore!

I also agree that it's not worth getting upset about because there are other ways to play the originals or just watch playthroughs of it. It doesn't erase the lore or how they were originally presented.

I see what you mean, but I think it was done tastefully. A lot of the bottle caps are for drinks that don't come bottled anymore so it's not like a kid would see them in the store and ask for them based on playing the game. Other stuff that's more recognizable, like the Duracell batteries, Dannon Fruit on the Bottom Yogurt, Vlasic Pickles, and Skippy Peanut Butter, are household brands that parents would buy anyway. It's a lot less predatory than micro transactions and cross promotions with actually expensive products. Like, I hate those cross promotions some games or content creators aimed at children and young teens have for shit like motorized bikes or drones and they're thousands of dollars. That's just too much.

I'd have to see this drama to believe it since modders generally don't care about "respecting the vision of the devs". That's, like, the exact opposite of the modder's creed lol
