Yes this seems like it's the business model.

I left Twitter a couple of months ago and the effect on my mental health has been fantastic. The speed at which it was degrading was incredible and it somehow seems like it's accelerating even further. Between the death of embeds yesterday and this unmitigated disaster today I'm wondering if/hoping that they might be entering a true death spiral.

I had to look up what this is, but it's a limit of reading 600 posts per day to stop companies from selling data or something. I can't imagine what my life would be like if I were reading more than 600 posts from anybody on any website per day.

600 tweets gets hit way faster than you'd think, you'd easily hit it with even extremely modest browsing. And it's not "to stop companies from selling data," it's literally because Elon isn't paying his bills from Google.

Yeah, a "read" here is basically any time a tweet is loaded. So if you're scrolling your feed or looking at replies every single one of those would count as a read.

"read" is a misleading term, what Twitter actually cares about is how many you're fetching, whether you actually engage with it on any level or not.

Does it count ads towards the 600?

If you open up a super popular tweet that has a ton of replies, you're basically done for the day.

It's the equivalent of loading 1 page of a GameFAQs topic and getting 50 at a time (out of 600).

It's a real shame because despite all the people who joke "nothing of value was lost" I actually liked Twitter. Like, a lot.

The thing is I never followed accounts for people's opinions or politics or stuff like that, I followed art accounts, meme and fun content accounts, and official media accounts (for their up to the minute announcements and press releases). Being able to just scroll quickly and scan all the new stuff everyday is what made Twitter great for me. Other social media sites just weren't as simple or convenient and Twitter burning to the ground is a big loss in that regard

I ended up using twitter for almost all of those things but my primary use for twitter has always been sports twitter, which was somehow actually good and useful. From actual good sources of news to links to interesting articles to just...getting a feel of what fanbases are feeling. Pretty much mostly good. You can't really get that level of engagement, especially with live sports, anywhere else(Without being at the sport itself).

But sports twitter will drain hundreds of a "Rate limit" in a short time. So its dead for now.
