I have already come to the realization that linear is trash. If I come to the realization that non-linear is also trash then I am fully realized that all video games are trash.

Elden Ring is an anomaly. It handles its open world better than any other open world game ever made, including games that I have never heard of and have no idea how their open world works.

And even then it can't escape some of the upsetting trappings of open world games.

No it isn't. It is what open world gaming should be.

Just because lazy developers create lazy open world games doesn't mean open world games are bad. It just means lazy developers are bad.

I find it stupid though when the average gamer says some stupid shit like "They should take a game franchise and make it open world, that would be awesome". Like when people want to play an open world Pokemon. Great, it's the same exact game, now it's just big.

It is odd how gamers can't understand that everyone likes different things in games. I find those games like "Left 4 Dead" to be ridiculously boring and no fun at all. But I certainly don't try to push my own preferences on other people like I am "right" and they are "wrong".

Enjoy what you want and let others do the same.

I like open world in moderation but yeah there's just been too many of them. Turn based games seem to be one of the few type of games that are mostly unaffected by it.

That's the other thing, it's hard to make a specific tailored experience like linear games do in open world, and since it would take eons to make something to do every square mile, they basically do two things. They either cram the entire open world with busy work and collectables or they sprinkle in a few events here and there and the rest of its "events" are basically coded to appear out of nowhere to happen at random to make it seem lively, but eventually feel very fake and computer generated because there are only so many variations that you'll have seen the same person walk up and say or do the same thing.

But somehow it would be "awesome" if every game franchise did that.

Open world games today certainly are a fad. However, open world games in general aren't new. The problem is that the flood of open world games these days means all of the games are open world but 9/10 of them don't have any substance. They're just all the same kinds of games.

It's totally understandable that people will get tired of open world games because of that.

Yeah it is only a matter of time before everyone realizes open world is just trash and we can finally move on from this shitty fad

There is nothing wrong with open world games, the problem is the "AAA" industry... hear me out:

  • Open world games are going to be a huge undertaking that will necessarily require the resources of a "AAA" gaming company. You can have a smaller open world experience technically, but it's going to sacrifice some of the aspects that a huge team and huge budget bring to this style of gaming.
  • Open world games require giving the player a ton of content to explore fairly freely and loads of options to customize their experience.

However, when "Open World" games became big as a trend, it coincided with the heavy monetization of the gaming industry. There are examples of open world games that existed before this trend or early on before these practices reached full saturation.

Think about it: When was the last time we got really good open world games? The Witcher 3, Fallout New Vegas, GTA 5, Xenoblade Chronicles X, Sacred 2, Skyrim...

What are the truly great open world games since then?

  • Breath of the Wild - sure, a major first party console game meant to entice console buyers after the failed Wii U. TotK being a resource recycling followup focused more on physics engine novelty.

  • Elden Ring - maybe the exception to the rule from From Software.

The rest are scaled down sequels like Red Dead Redemption and Xenoblade 3 - or poorly thought out cash ins like Metal Gear Survive. Or buggy messes that over-promised like Cyberpunk 2077 and No man's Sky.

This. Like any genre, it just depends how well the mechanic is used. But a lot of devs do struggle to make an engaging open world.

I think the problem is that a lot of devs treat it as an open map to throw a bunch of boxes that you need to check off by doing rote activities rather than as an actual place to explore and find secrets in.

I played Immortals Fenyx Rising right before Elden Ring, not only did it hook me, it made Immortals feel worse by comparison. Both Elden Ring and BotW/TotK are the right ways to it.
