The NES one can make advancement difficult through faulty programming. Like, in the final castle, ghosts appear with no warning. It's not like in Super Ghouls 'n Ghosts where it takes them a split-second to materialize so that you can get out of the way if you need to. They're just on you. They can appear right on top of Arthur or sabotage him mid-jump. Even if you wait for one to materialize so that you can avoid it, another might still appear and hit you anyway.
