Louisiana will be forced to draw a new map that includes at least one more black majority district.

If Louisiana and Alabama drew their districts the way they should have back in 2021, the GOP might not have the majority in the House right now.

I don't think there's a might to that.

not sure, if they ignore the court, then it sets a president for everyone to ignore them. GOP needs that power base

the states don't have to ignore the court, just draw an equally gerrymandered replacement. even if they all get shot down, each one pushes the damage through for another election cycle.

If a state ignores the Supreme Court, it'll lead to other states ignoring them. Conservatives have spent a lot of time and capital to get that 6-3 majority, they aren't gonna set that precedent.

The voting rights act should have never been gutted. This was the intended result of Republicans challenging it, and the justices who voted that way are incredibly naive.

They could basically hold you in contempt in perpetuity. Then it would be up to the feds to carry out the arrest and punishment.
Pissing off the highest court in the land is a losing scenario if they really want to flex their power with the executive branch backing them.

there are times when democrats draw maps advantageously. This is nothing new as a whole... But of course I'm recent years republicans have taken it to blatantly self serving extremes.

For one: They use sophisticated software now to hyper divide districts down to the block and street.

Secondly, they started using strategies called cracking and stacking to either isolate and create a favorable district in an area where there traditionally wasn't one by stacking smaller neighborhoods, or take a favorable democratic district and crack it up into surrounding favorable republican districts. This works especially well against poorer minority neighborhoods.

They won't ignore it.

They'll do exactly what the GOP has done in other states - keep submitting redrawn maps that they know will get rejected, until they finally submit a good one just before the next election (in this case, 2024), but it'll be "too late" to have it implemented so the next election (2024) still goes ahead with the old, extremely gerrymandered map.

Who don't answer to SCOTUS. Again they have no enforcement power and and lever to pull to enforce their decisions. That is by design in case SCOTUS ever goes rogue with their rulings.

Then I would implore blue states to see to it all red districts are gerrymanderee out and the ones that can't their reps should be refused seating.

North Carolina and some other red-controlled purple states (I think Georgia and Wisconsin?) have repeatedly been told to re-draw their maps and either don't at all or re-draw them just as gerrymandered or worse and get struck down again.

NY and other blue states need to adopt a "chronological order" mandate. If the SC strikes down NC's maps in 2017 and NY's in 2018, then NY refuses to enforce a new compliant map until NC fixes theirs. If the SC tries to come after them for it, they just ask, "why aren't you on NC's ass? They've been in violation even longer than us."

It's not clear what New York has to do right now. Really depends on whether the 2022 maps were ad hoc and temporary or if they're expected to last the entire decade.

It's also not clear if we even followed the rules before the special master drew the maps for us.

We have court cases and progress to explain this, but I'm not sure if we'll have the finality we need.

So there's a difference.

They were told by lower courts. And in the case of I think Ohio there was a legal mechanism for the courts to toss the maps, but no legal mechanism for the courts to make new maps. Other states DO give the courts that power.

The case here is that states do not want to play chicken with the Supreme Court and lead to a situation where the Court sets precedent of drawing their maps. The court has been trying to defer from ever doing this and kicking it back to the states but clearly there is a limit. Right now, said limit benefits conservatives as still being pretty lenient. However, trying to push the issue isn't in their best interest.
