I was stoked when I heard they were going to sell calzones, but was very dissapointed by what is provided and the price point.

First off the cheapest calzone is the pepporoni which costs $7 base. It is about the size of half a medium pizza folded in half. The reason this is....kinda jacked, is that an ongoing special at all Pappa murphy's is either A: 1 medium 2 topping pizza for 6.99 (same price), or 1 xtra large with just cheese, pepporoni, sausage, or both, for 9.99 (3$ more).

Now before this, I would order the 9.99 just pepporoni and make 2 calzones for myself (cutting the pizza in 2, and then folding 1/2 of the pizza into a calzone (and storing the other half in the fridge). I also would add my own toppings (mushrooms/onions/bell peppers usually, olives if I have some already but I rarely do).

If you compare them to each other, you get 4 of the calzones out of the x-large pizza, while actually getting more toppings (from them) not to mention being able to add your own to your calzone. It's 10x better for 1/4th of the price.

The price point compared to the size is the real deal breaker here, but outside of that it's just not as good unless you add additional toppings (I would imagine) and even then it's small.

To create your own with 4 toppings which gives you about the same amount of toppings as you get per inch on the Xlarge ny, costs $9.75.....24 cents less then getting the whole X-large pizza.

Again 1 xtra large can be made into 4 calzones, with way more toppings on each of them naturally AND you can add your own to it, not to mention cooking them seperately (You could even freeze them and defrost them later, I have noticed no difference in the crust doing that (perhaps due to it being thin crust?).

So sadly I can not recommend them, unless A: you don't care about money and B. You just want a very small calzone that even leaves me still hungry (and I don't eat that much anymore).

Half of an Xtra large is a bit more than I really want to eat, it's true, but cutting it up into 3rds just doesn't seem worth it, and I usually eat it when I'm really hungry. I also only the calzone style some of the time (it's just faster/easier, and you can fit a bit more cheese and ingrediants inside). The other way is to cut it in two, curl up the new "end" to make another crust side (for both of the split pizzas), and then cut the cardboard underneath it in half leaving about 1/2 and inch past the dough on each side.

Then you curl up that 1/2 inch, in case any cheese/toppings slip over your newly made crust, and you are good to go.

Anyway, that is the second "new" thing I was really looking forward to from papa murphy's that ended up dissapointing. The meatballs were just way to salty (these meatballs are making me thirsty!), so I ended up either A: Still buying them from olive garden (they have a special 3 for 3.99....so they cost 1.33 each (I'd say 5 meatballs to a pound.....which means 3 meatballs is over 1/2 a pound of ground beef, which is $6 a pound here.....basically cheaper then just buying the ground beef at this point), or B: Make my own (alot of work but slow cooking them in my pasta sauce is better, and the only way for me to get really good (slow cooked) itallian sausage around here (olive garden and other itallian places don't compare).

Anyway, hope this gives someone ideas on making calzones at home!! Viva la PIZZA!!!
