The fatalities are so lazy and catoony looking compared to 1 and 2. Why did they go that route?

Yeah if we're just talking base-Mortal Kombat 3 there was no Scorpion.

But this was never a big deal for me as Cyrax, who is on the roster, basically had the same "free hit after the opponent gets pulled to you" move with his green net.

MK3 was pretty lame.

I get that not every character can appear in every game, but they cut out most of the good characters from the previous games and replaced them with lousy originals. No Johnny Cage. No Scorpion. Unmasked Sub-Zero. Jax with stupid fucking mechanical-ass arms that even Mortal Kombat: Annihilation poked fun at. Motaro and Sheeva were nice additions. But who really wants to play as Stryker or Kabal? The robot ninjas screamed, "We're out of ideas."

Ermac was a nice shoutout to a glitch in the arcade original where Scorpion would sometimes during red on the menu screen and an error message would pop up leading people to believe he was a hidden character. But he could have been a red Scorpion. He didn't have to be a robot.

Ultimate was a very good game, but Vanilla 3 was a bit lacking.

Pretty much this, the new characters were definitely a step down, really only a fan of Kabal and Sheeva out of them all and fatalities were definitely goofier.

Ermac IS red Scorpion (different moves of course). It's Sektor that's the red cyborg.

This clearly Cyrax was a replacement. He was even the same color. And had a teleport.

It also introduced Stryker. I don't really care about the series beyond, 2 or well Trilogy eas the peak for me, but who wanted an ordinary dumb looking street cop in the game?

So what was the difference between Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3 and Mortal Kombat Trilogy? I think the former was on snes with less characters while the latter was on Playstation and N64.

Having that huge roster on the Playstation with load times (better than Mortsl Kombat 3, I believe that did have noticeable loading though this was mid 90s. But it was almost a minute per fight).

Trilogy was fun. You could put Rain against Subzero and have the battle of the elements.

Didn't MK3 have a "robot" Smoke (who also had the harpoon move coming out from his chest)?

When I was younger I bought Trilogy cause I thought it had all 3 games. Turns out it had none of them. It also played like crap.

I thought Trilogy was fun back then. I dunno it played like Mortal Kombat 3 I guess. Tbh the only game I actually cared about was 2. I thought Mortal Kombat 1 sucked.

I have no opinions on the newer ones as after Trilogy I didn't play them anymore. Wasn't 4 in 3d and with weapons?

Id say MK3 was my least favorite of MK1-3, but it was still a really fun game.

Stryker sucks, sure. But Kabal? Dude was my main in MK3. Hes a ton of fun.

Gameplay wise it's not so good, but I do like the darker atmosphere it had.

UMK3 was fun! i like the cyberpunk vibe and how to broke through the floors and shit

As a kid, there was nothing cooler than bustin a cap in your friends ass or cheezin that dash run to make them spin. People just don't want fun anymore.

Honorable mention: Rains roundhouse kick and Jax's metal arms

I did like the robot ninjas tbh. Sektor and Cyrax? I think. Didn't one of them shoot a net and would incapacitate you.

Geez on a topic where 3 is probably the worst easily. I don't like 1 but it is at least historical. I am sure posting in this a lot.

TBH there's no reason to play Ultimate either. MK Trilogy is the exact same thing + more characters.

They were definitely running out of good ideas and got sillier. (And run way sucked)

Still way better than 4

I liked parts of it, but they only gave you five nanoseconds of "FINISH HIM" time, so it didn't have the same appeal to me as MK2.

I played UMK 3 on the Genesis a lot. A, C, Up, B, Up, B, A, Down is entrenched in my memory as much as Up, Up, Down, Down, Left, Right, Left, Right, B, A. The only way that I could do the "Finish Him" commands were using the option in the cheat menu where you just have to press one button. With that said, I think MK 3 and it's derivatives are not as good as MK 2. I really hated the run mechanic and dial-a-combo.

I'm OK with the dial a combo system. Never been a fan of timing.

Old school Mortal Kombat has always been a shitty franchise.

Get past the shock value of the fatalities, and it's a stiff, clunky fighter with a roster stuffed with too many generic ninja palette swaps.

Back in the day I always went for Street Fighter, Killer Instinct, and Samurai Showdown.

Not true. It isn't as technical as the other fighting games at the time but the gameplay still holds up pretty well today.
Its also the secrets, the lore, artstyle, music, bosses that made those games memorable and iconic.

When I was a kid playing the mks, me and my friends would float between, all the fighters. Fatalities were an attraction at first, but we often enough didn't even do them, and just enjoyed the game.

it was a byproduct of a rushed game. Strangely enough they pushed UP the date of the first movie's release which is why it looked rushed because they wanted both to be out and blowing up at the same time

Believe it or not UMK3 is still one of the tops competitively to MK fans and general MK fans, even among the current generation MKs

There was a lot of subliminal marketing the movie did that tied into MK3. The end credits have icons roll randomly that were a kombat code to put into the game. Various other marketing materials for the movie had codes.

Wasn't the PSX version of MKT the only one where you can play the past bosses?

MKII was such a huge success they rushed out 3 and the movie was coming as well.
