Zelda certainly isn't and I haven't played the others, but why would Souls games not be RPGs?

Because you can't talk the final boss into killing itself.

Mana series?

The two Pathfinder games, Kingmaker or Wrath of the Righteous.

They can have turn based but they're originally real time with pause, Baldur's Gate style.

Pillars of Eternity as well.

I don't remember much of Gothic or Dark Messiah so I won't take about them, but the Souls games fit the foundation of an RPG way better than most turn based games. Zelda is arguable, I would call them Adventure games but can see the argument for calling them RPGs.

I'd argue that the original three Zelda games are more metroidvania than rpg.

12 pretty much still has the atb system it's just presented to look like it's not. 13 comes off like atb/turn based too just makes it visually more impressive looking than older games

Generally speaking, in video games the difference between an RPG and an action game is that action games require skill in things like control and reflexes whereas RPGs are more about strategy and having enough stats.

Obviously in practice that line can get blurred. Turn based games are unquestionably RPGs, and games with no stats are definitely not RPGs.

Games like Diablo that are real time but success comes almost entirely from stats and using the right spells/attacks/items etc. are still easy to classify as RPGs. Zelda games may have some stats but they are peripheral so it's easy to say they're not.

Souls games are more of a hybrid. So they can be hard to categorize. They usually have a high skill level and while you can use high stats and other stuff to cheese all the difficult battles... most people see them as highly skill based games, so they're usually categorized as action adventure games with RPG elements.

It's up to you where you want to put them though.

It was only for the first form of the last boss but I liked that you could do this in Mass Effect.

Difference between a cRPG and a tRPG is you can't fuck with the DM with the former,
but the game can certainly screw you.

Yeah i wouldnt exactly say this is a small group.

Bioware is what id list as well. I could see an argument for KOTOR (havent played any of their games prior to Mass Effect, aside from KOTOR 1 and 2), but Dragon Age and Mass Effect certainly doesnt count.

Fallout from 3 onwards (3, New Vegas and 4) arent Turnbased either.

If you want older titles... well theres the Legacy of Goku Trilogy for GBA (Skip the first one). DBZ Kakarot is a newer title, still getting DLC.
