When asked if the full game will feature more ethnically diverse characters, producer Naoki Yoshida responded that it will not reflect the scope of the modern world's ethnic diversity, explaining that the story is set in a geographically isolated region.

He stated that the design concept "always heavily featured medieval Europe, incorporating historical, cultural, political, and anthropological standards that were prevalent at the time." Due to the constraints of this setting, the staff felt that it would be challenging to incorporate the same level of racial and cultural diversity in modern-day Earth or Final Fantasy XIV without disrupting the "narrative boundaries." Yoshida remarked that although the genre is fantasy, the story is still nevertheless rooted in reality, and therefore assigning distinctive ethnicities to the protagonists and antagonists would risk "triggering audience preconceptions, inviting unwarranted speculation, and ultimately stoking flames of controversy."

Finally, he commented that he hopes that the focus of the story is less on the characters' outward appearances but rather on the individual complexities and diverse nature of human beings.

I plan to try it out on discount once it releases on PC. It's been a long time since I've played one and this seems like a good title to jump in on.

40 People on ResetEra, the most extreme bubble in that regard, claim that they boycott FF XVI for diversity reasons.

There is no other place on the internet where 2.9% would state that, and I'm sure that even these 2.9% are not all fully honest.

They gave it a 3/5. Which rounded up to Metacritic is 6/10.

But I don't think a 3/5 sounds as bad as a 6/10.

I don't have a PS5 yet, so I'll be waiting. I really need to start working more so I can afford more. I switched to part time, so I could get some training, but it's definitely not working out.

Goddamn, writing online articles must be the easiest fucking gig ever. Just read Twitter/some message boards, find something about race or LGBTQ+, write a little intro paragraph and then just cherrypick some Tweets/responses, and boom, there's your paycheck.

Sounds like this boycott though is going to have a significant impact like the Hogwarts one. I'm sure though Square is going to feel compelled to answer to the 40 people out of millions who give a shit about this.

If he said he just wanted to white people in the game that would have been cool. But when people act like Mid Evil Europe had no contact with people other thing white people, and like stand on it as some brave historical point. Just irks me. I wouldn't buy it just for that. Not the all white cast.

There are some pretty bizarre gaming ecosystems that just breed toxicity and actively promotes harassment. Resetera does it on the down low, tbf, 4chan a bit too unhinged that they loop around to being hinged due to the chaos of it. Of course the crowning achievement for toxicity being gamingcirclejerk subreddit, who's fully embraced this like witch hunt radical activist in the gaming sphere where every single event is a Hitler level offense to them.

Yeah this is a weird thing to make an article about. Everyone is desperate for a story.

i wonder if they said "we didn't feel comfortable putting poc in a story that involves slavery" would have softened this conversation. maybe not.

some people would say then put poc in but don't make them slaves. but then you'd have the anti woke crowds complaining. not that i care about them, but it would be a thing.
