The whole, loving his baby chicken/chocobo could potentially be concerning, but otherwise I remember him being a great dad who wanted to do all he could for his child.

It was his pet and in so far as I know, across the whole series, fried chocobo isn't a thing.

Man, using the chocobo as 'racism' would be such a reach lol. It was a connection to his kid. People will be upset about anything.

That being said, not having black characters in FFXVI does suck though. Even if its supposedly based around Europe or whatever, it doesn't mean people didn't immigrate or move. Or its just a fantasy world, nothing wrong with adding whoever. Its your story.

Which, tbh, is hardly his fault. We dont really even teach it well in Europe.

And his attempted suicide out of depression of his son. That shit was heavy. He was a great character imo, one of the few three dimensional ones in that game.

It's a game made by Japanese developers. They don't give two fucks about black representation and they almost certainly don't care about the demographics of medieval Europe.

They landed on "medieval Europe" for their ascetics, and that's pretty much where the parellels to real life end.

I don't think it is inherently racist to not have a black character in your game as long as you didn't make the choice because you hate black people.

This is the most sane take. So the game has poor representation, I'm not calling them a racist over it. It's what they wanted to do and that's that. I don't care if they made everyone black instead of white, so long as that is what they wanted to do.

Diversity done well is an enhancement. But a lack of diversity isnt really a detraction from an otherwise great thing

His opinion on medieval Europe is closer to correct than some revisionist history suggesting that non-white people were common in Europe. Even today, Ukrainian refugees were being prepared for seeing non-white people for the first time in their lives. The handful of examples of non-white people that historians tout tend to be the exceptions that prove the rule

They can make the game they want sure and I don't consider it a deal breaker. But man that Medieval Europe excuse just seems really silly considering the game opens up in a desert with giant summoned monsters and everyone talks with British accents about crystals and dominants.

I liked the demo. First demo Ive beat in a long time. I went on to play the post demo stuff

But he's more than that is what I'm saying. If you only look at him as just a token black guy then you are the problem not him. He had a legitimate reason to be angry. Wouldn't you if Shinra killed your wife,(Seemingly) killed your best friend, getting your arm shot off then have the entire town blame you for everything? Like that's a justifiable reason be angry. Anyone would. Also most of the time he's angry is usually when the plot involves Shinra. He hates Shinra more than anyone else. Just because he swears and he's angry doesn't mean he perpetuate the stereotype. In his original story he wasnt even like that.
Edit: nvm forget it. Can't convince racist to see the other way around.

It's still meant to maintain the feeling of traditional fantasy which is based on the high medieval European period. We also have jet engines and rockets today, but in many parts of the world there still isn't much ethnic diversity. Again, Ukrainian refugees had to be acclimated to seeing non-white people.

Did any reviewer compare it to Tales of Arise?

Surely the kingdom in this game is supposed to be one of the more advanced? You play as the son of a notable noble who becomes a soldier for an empire. Not a poor refugee who previously had never left their village.

Even traditional fantasy may not have human diversity but they have stuff like dwarves and elves that show the clash of different cultures and beliefs.

I don't know which army was supposed to be which in the demo. Ironblood. Empire. Beats me.

I'm sure it'll be clearer in the main game.

Also yeah the Square-Enix design does make a lot of characters samey in their face. Generally they're recognisable by their hair and outfit.

That may partially be because several of the bad guys were traitors wearing the empires armor.

i might play it later. rn im occupied with Tears of the Kingdom and Final Fantasy VII Remake.

i can manage like 2 RPGs at the same time but 3 is just too much... lol

So I know there aren't any black people in the game, but what about the wider world the game is set in? Are we certain that there isn't lore that shows black people travelling to Valisthea seeing a bunch of crazy honkies summoning gods, enslaving and killing each other and turning around and going to a nicer place?
