Republican lawmakers turned their wrath Monday on the Utah school district that has banned the Bible for younger students calling the decision reprehensible and embarrassing for the state.

The attacks came during a lengthy and combative interim meeting where Davis School District officials were called to explain the determination on the religious text, which has drawn national attention since it was made public earlier this month.

You should be ashamed, said Rep. Brady Brammer, R-Pleasant Grove.

This is offensive, added Sen. Curt Bramble, R-Provo.

Rep. Mark Strong, R-Bluffdale, said taking the religious text off shelves of elementary and middle schools in the district was bogus and a move toward accepting the religion of atheism and hedonism.

Something tells me they wouldn't be bothered if the Quran was pulled from school shelves.

What was the explanation behind this again? I seem to recall it being something Republicans wrote that blew up in their faces regarding acceptable content for children's schools.

I don't agree with banning the Bible, conceptually. (I'm a Christian.) But I seem to vaguely recall having a chuckle at the expense of people pushing legislation to hurt others only to realize they've hurt themselves in the process.

There's so much going on, it's impossible to keep track of all of it.

Better yet, arrange a Bible story telling time and purposely read scriptures that feature some terrible shit. I'd almost recommend reading the entirety of the Songs of Solomon but that might get you put on lists if read in front of children.

When I was in high school, there was a shelf in the library for all sorts of religious texts. You had the Bible, but you also had the Quran as well as texts relating to Buddhism and Hinduism and stuff.

I don't think the Bible should be banned from being in a school library. To that end, I agree with the backlash.

But that comes with like a hundred different caveats, because this controversy is one pro-religion controversy after decades and decades of religion - specifically, evangelical American Christianity - squashing the rights of others.

They wanted books with queer people removed from schools. They wanted books criticizing and analysing racism and slavery removed from schools. They wanted the Quran removed from schools. Fuck, didn't Mississippi try and ban Yoga as a radical religious experience that was "confusing children"?

Then there's Creationism, where a bunch of conservative religious morons argued for the right to teach a pseudo-scientific religious origin of the world in opposition to evolution, because the theory of evolution was "against the teachings of God". Right-wing hypocrites like to bitch and moan about "facts over feelings", but where were they when conservatives replaced a long-standing scientific theory with "God made the world 6000 years ago and made dinosaur bones to confuse us?"

So while I do think the Bible should be available to check out of a school library, I'm not so sympathetic to the righteous indignation of these conservative cocksuckers. Oh no, your precious widdle booky-wook got taken out of schools? Frankly, I almost think they deserve it. Apologize for blatantly using "Critical Race Theory" to remove any text you disagree with in school, apologize for banning religious texts from other religions, and apologize for pushing Creationism as a valid alternative to evolution. Otherwise, suck shit and live like the rest of us, you fucking cretins.
