You know it's not Reddit that creates subreddits, right? Imagine if you made a YouTube channel, put thousands of hours into it, and built up a large viewer base. Google decides to do something greedy that limits your ability to control how viewers post on your channel and how they view it. So, since it impacts your channel directly, your decide to close your channel until Google changes their mind. Google doesn't like this and says, "Open your channel back up or we're going to take it away and let someone else use it."

It's not a perfect analogy, but it's similar. And here's Gobs just crying because he can't view funny animal pictures, refusing to even acknowledge what the protest is about (again, but at least this time it's not about Black people's right to live).

I guess since it's not a civil right, we shouldn't mind third party developers being squeezed into non-existence by corporations. Excellent post

This community is also fiercely in favor of any and all protests, no matter how disruptive.

The cause is also not a bad cause, but at the same time...they have to know this protest was never going to get anywhere.

The userbase as a whole has power. A tiny percentage of the userbase with a small escalation of site access privileges does not have any more power than any other small percentage of the userbase in the long run. They're borrowing power--renting it, really. The cost of their power is to follow the moderator agreement (which they're breaking by arbitrarily closing/locking subreddits)

You say "siding with corporate greed," I say "most people don't use third party apps nor care about this protest and the certified Reddit mods are whining about the lack of support"

The mods are disrupting the service, and that makes them the enemy here.

If it suddenly became unusable, or a 4chan free-for-all? You have to admit the mods have some kind of leverage.

Why didnt they just stop moderating at all period and disable the mod bots? Let Reddit get flooded with whatever illegal shit people will inevitably post to it. That would get Reddit targeted by authorities and advertisers would back out. That would force Spezs hand unlike the weak shit they are currently doing

I feel like any tantrum, no matter how dumb it is, is seen as a protest nowadays.

I don't like the changes, but I feel like reddit has let these 3rd party apps slide all these years while letting them make money off their platform, as well as simultaneously costing reddit ad revenue because of no ads.

It was great they did nothing for so long, but they've realized that they don't want the competition and losses anymore and the party is over. So they made the API prohibitively expensive to get rid of the leeches.

That's actually a really good idea. They would have been replaced, but once the floodgates are open the damage would be done. Unfortunately that means tanking the communities, but...considering Reddit wants to follow Musk's lead with Twitter, and considering what a right wing hellscape Twitter became almost overnight, most of the good communities on Reddit are probably gonna go to shit anyway.
