Both the mods and the administration suck. The mods have way too much power even though they don't even get paid and can ban anyone from their subreddit for no valid reason, with no real accountability. You don't even know if you got modded there unless you used reveddit. They way overplayed their hand here, especially the ones who went beyond the two day blackout. Not all of the mods there are bad by any means, but the worst ones I've seen are some of the worst I've seen on any site, worse than here.

On the other hand, they do have a point about the API issue. Also, the administration has been way too hands off over the years, allowing these mods to run rough-shot over the userbase, which is why hardly anyone actually participates in subreddits outside of upvoting.

The cause is also not a bad cause, but at the same time...they have to know this protest was never going to get anywhere.

I know I invited that kind of reaction by starting my post with that, but it's not false in this case. There are a lot of mods there who go on power trips with no real accountability. This protest was going too far.

You know it's not Reddit that creates subreddits, right? Imagine if you made a YouTube channel, put thousands of hours into it, and built up a large viewer base. Google decides to do something greedy that limits your ability to control how viewers post on your channel and how they view it. So, since it impacts your channel directly, your decide to close your channel until Google changes their mind. Google doesn't like this and says, "Open your channel back up or we're going to take it away and let someone else use it."

It's not a perfect analogy, but it's similar. And here's Gobs just crying because he can't view funny animal pictures, refusing to even acknowledge what the protest is about (again, but at least this time it's not about Black people's right to live).

It all depends on what the subreddit is. /r/nfl isn't a big sub because the moderators crafted a community and did this or that. In fact, many of the moderator driven content (like the 32 days of teams series) is crap. The reason it's a big sub is because the nfl is popular and the subreddit handle is what you would expect it to be. Most of the moderation staff also wasn't around when the sub was created or during their primary growth period. The whole notion that they cultivated a community that wouldn't exist without them is moronic.

Sure, users could have responded to them being indefinitely locked out by making /r/nfl2 but that just makes things more confusing for your average user (there are a number of subs I'm in with overlapping content where none of them are particularly dominant so I just have to be subscribed to all of them to get what I would normally want from one sub about topic X).

I mean, you yourself said it was a niche community; this isn't that disruptive to people's lives.

And giving up before you e started because you don't expect results isn't how things get done in this world. You think it was easy for the first people to say, "maybe you should stop enslaving people even though everyone does it and it's very cost effective"?

Not to say the two problems are equatable in scope or seriousness obviously. Just that you fail 100% of the times you don't try.

CE is a small community that loves protests.

Reddit is a gigantic community with 52 million daily active users as of 2020. That's not a niche community. That's a whole country. Most of the people using Reddit just want to go to their favorite subreddits and enjoy the content posted there.

Most of those people do not use third party apps. Most of those people honestly do not care about this cause, and they just want to be able to go to r/D&D to ask questions or find content.

The mods are disrupting the service, and that makes them the enemy here.

What was stupid was announcing "hurr durr we're closing for 2 days y'all, that'll show em!"

What should've happened is "we're going fucking dark, period." Then let reddit figure out wtf is going on. If someone tells me I can just sit on my hands for 2 days while you fuck off I'm not going to feel very threatened. I'm not sure what they expected. And I say this as a mod who's sub is still dark.

Yeah, would have gotten mods removed a lot quicker at the least. With the way it is right now they're prolonging the inevitable, but things will be back to full operation before too much longer. All the harm done to people by privating useful information is hopefully just temporary.

it's pretty cringe that these power tripping volunteer mods honestly think they wield any kind of actual power over the company.

How don't they? Working for free has done nothing but keep Reddit's bottom line low. The free labor they do is part of what makes the site even usable.

If it suddenly became unusable, or a 4chan free-for-all? You have to admit the mods have some kind of leverage.

I feel like any tantrum, no matter how dumb it is, is seen as a protest nowadays.

I don't like the changes, but I feel like reddit has let these 3rd party apps slide all these years while letting them make money off their platform, as well as simultaneously costing reddit ad revenue because of no ads.

It was great they did nothing for so long, but they've realized that they don't want the competition and losses anymore and the party is over. So they made the API prohibitively expensive to get rid of the leeches.

The userbase as a whole has power. A tiny percentage of the userbase with a small escalation of site access privileges does not have any more power than any other small percentage of the userbase in the long run. They're borrowing power--renting it, really. The cost of their power is to follow the moderator agreement (which they're breaking by arbitrarily closing/locking subreddits)

You say "siding with corporate greed," I say "most people don't use third party apps nor care about this protest and the certified Reddit mods are whining about the lack of support"
I don't give a f*** wat u 'think'. I not a mod, I don't use third party apps. Corporate greed is winning bc of pu*** a** shills like your kind

Have you actually ever been to 4chan? I know you guys always talk about it like it Voldemort around here but the blue boards are some of the best moderated forums.

They don't make up a bunch of dumb arbitrary rules, they don't just ban you because they don't like you or don't agree with you, they don't make board wide decisions just because they feel like it, they don't just decide to close topics "because things got a wittle heated", and more importantly because it is all anonymous they never develop that power trip mentality, nobody will ever know who they are, and they are cool with that.

They are janitors. If you post something that has nothing to do with the board you are on, your post gets deleted. If you post something like porn or gore, you get ip banned. Everything else is fair game. That is it. That is all a mod ever needs to be.

That's actually a really good idea. They would have been replaced, but once the floodgates are open the damage would be done. Unfortunately that means tanking the communities, but...considering Reddit wants to follow Musk's lead with Twitter, and considering what a right wing hellscape Twitter became almost overnight, most of the good communities on Reddit are probably gonna go to shit anyway.

Going need some proof on them actually hurting Reddit. Also, part of why this has been a sideshow is because Spez has trying to portray himself as being reasonable with those nasty 3rd Party App Developers up until they bring out the receipts.

Heck, the issues with the mods people have been complaining about are likely to get worse because Reddit is trying to get powergrabbers to open up everything. Depending on how they implement the idea of voting out mods you'll people get idiots out ones that are reliable.

I think it's hilarious people are fearmongering that Reddit will turn into a shitfest, when most subs are either back or never left and nothing has changed. Giving way too much importance to the mods, who have and are regularly removed or replaced.

It's also hilarious that people think the few holdouts are gonna be any different once they've replaced the mods. As if one regular user is better than the next at this.

Most of the subs that left also have tons of alternatives, which just started getting more traffic. It also didn't help that there's no message that a blackout is occurring. When you go to a sub that's blacked out, it just says it's private. Subs go private all the time, so people just find alternatives.

The most hilarious are those comparing this to civil rights or workers rights. This is more like a bunch of Karens complaining how they always got free soda refills, and now don't.
