the fact that this game rewards linear flanks but not triangular pincers is still kinda funny tbh
I guess archers can technically trigger follow-ups using a triangular formation on occasion

I think theres a triangle finisher in fire emblem for GBA with the Pegasus knights. That would have been cool in here as well

i havent played tactics ogre or final fantasy tactics before. ogre is on my list, after the next trails game sometime. ive been holding out for a fft remake as well since apparently the current best version is on the iphone and i dont really want to play the whole game like that

i probably also want to finish fire emblem 3 houses and play the new fire emblem before tactics ogre and fft as well

Literal zero grinding required. You can complete the game on Hard difficulty (which is actually HARD and not code for normal) without even touching the optional/repeatable battles. The game actively takes a ton of steps to make it so you never have to grind, such as a SHARP exp curve (instantly level in one action if 3+ levels below map level, down to 1-2 exp per action if 2+ levels above map level)... with the exception of weapon upgrades. Weapon upgrades are structured such that, if you treat them as only being to pick one, maybe two in each tier, they are an interesting choice because you very much have to pick and choose which to get per character and which characters to focus on first. However, if you feel you need them all, the grind to do so is insane. (And also literally impossible until NG+ because there are literally not enough materials in the game until NG+ expands the special shops.)

The no-grind structure works well with the fact that the characters are all completely unique classes and have basically no ability overlap other than a couple spells being similar but in different elements, and the red mage character having some spell reuse from other characters. There is no reclassing. You pick characters for each map based on the roles you want to have on that map. To that end, the game makes it so the only penalty for using a character you haven't used in many maps is that they'll have to spend several turns on utility abilities or using consumables on your characters before they do relevant damage to enemies again, but they'll still get an entire level for tossing a +str item on someone or putting a trap on the ground in the corner.

Every single character feels worthwhile and has real strengths, though they may have different power curves that make them lackluster for part of the game but worth picking up later since you can just blitz through their levels to get to good abilities, or they may be map-dependent. Character archetypes include some really unique stuff too, like a guy whose whole thing is building ladders to climb and traps that push enemies when walked over (insanely strong btw), four variants of archer that all manage to have extremely different strengths and utility, a time mage that can literally reverse time, a very powerful and unique take on the assassin archetype that manages to not be based around low-percentage effects, and a merchant whose abilities are all around debuffing and taunting enemies with speeches.

The game also has elemental terrain interactions a bit similar to Divinity OS, but not quite as robust; it still is a pretty defining reason to use one mage over another on certain maps, though.

The game also has multiple story branches and has branches within those branches as well, such that there are up to four completely different maps you could be playing for each chapter. All eventually converge after a few chapters per arc, though. Which path you get is based on decisions your entire party makes as a vote, and you can only ask characters to please vote one way; whether they listen is based on arguments you make (which can require you to find information in previous events first and require you to appeal to that specific character; the choices are never bogus and obviously bad) as well as your conviction values (hidden parameters based mostly on how you have been answering prompts all game; developing a particular type of personality makes characters more likely to listen if you maintain the same values). Each choice in the story feels weighty, and there is no blank-and-white morality or obvious best outcome, more like stuff where different value systems would see different options as preferable.

Expect a TON of dialogue between battles BTW. Some of the early chapters have over an hour of narrative, even up to two hours if you watch all the scenes, between them. There is less between chapters after chapter 5, but it's still very different from other tactics games. Battles tend to be much longer and can also run over an hour, though.
