Horrible car accident. He flew 25ft away. He had a pulse immediately after the accident but then died not long later. CPR was performed by a bunch of nurses that were driving by, and even a defibrillator used by an ambulance that just so happened to be driving by and even had a patient of their own in the back.

The point of this topic is that I saw it all and there was nothing I can do to change how things ended but I cant help but have a deep guilt about it. Why is this?

This is a perfectly reasonable reason to go to therapy, don't be afraid to reach out to someone who has professional help.

Do you have a therapist? Trauma around death and survivor's guilt is definitely something you need professional help with.

It gets easier as time passes. Seen some wild stuff in my time. It's natural to feel like you could or should have helped in some way.

Yeah, maybe I should just to be safe. I only began to feel bad when I found out he was innocent, and it was some other asshole that caused the accident. Maybe its because my cousin died the same way or maybe because I realized that no matter what you do you may not always be able to protect your loved ones.

I think that might be the first time I heard a voice coming from a character in a video game

I didn't play Sinistar or Gauntlet until years later

I witnessed something similar driving with my parents as a teen. I couldn't get the mental picture out of my head for a while, but I didn't get the survivors guilt...maybe because we were just passing by and not involved. Or maybe because I'm a cold, unsympathetic person.

Anyways, agreed it's not an abnormal or uncommon feeling - it says good things about the degree to which you care about strangers - but find someone to talk to about it if it lingers.

I saw a guy on a jet ski get his arm hacked off by a boat once because of a collision. My aunt and uncle put the guy up on the back of their boat, and went through like AAAAAALL the towels trying to stop the bleeding while we got him back to shore. That was decades ago. I wonder what happened to the guy, but I won't lie, he seemed like a real trooper for a guy that has his arm hanging on by a single string of flesh.

Could be survivor's guilt, could be that you feel like you could/should have done more to help, could just be conflating feeling bad for him/his family with feeling guilty (they can feel surprisingly similar). Either way, it's pretty normal to feel something like that in the immediate aftermath, but if you find yourself struggling to move on from it, I'll echo what others have said and suggest looking into therapy to help you process it.
