Why do you all drive on the shoulder to merge into traffic? Is that the law or is it something illegal that everyone just does

Speaking as someone from NJ, most people from most other states also drive like assholes.

The trick is that different people adapt to different road conditions. What's acceptable in NYC isn't acceptable in New Jersey, and neither is the same as what's acceptable in rural Pennsylvania.

You're more likely to notice what you're not used to and call it "wrong". But put you in someone else's state and they think you're the one who's the asshole.

9 times out of 10, when I have issues with a driver in NJ, it's someone with out-of-state plates.

It's mostly the latter and partly because no one lets anybody in

Jersey has some of the most unintuitive streets ive driven on. Infrastructure is from the Cretaceous.

Besides that, I see that same behavior anywhere. Some people think you have to be nice and let everybody merge, some will speed up into slow traffic just so you cant merge, silly people.

Im guessing those people on the shoulder are just not confident enough to trust the merge.

Fair points

I grew up in southern CA and currently live in Philly. All major cities are filled with terrible and inconsiderate drivers that treat the roadways like racetracks.
