I dunno if it's supposed to be super hard but I died a lot, I do not connect with the clunky and weighty combat very much. Gear is pretty important and will let you outlevel the main story pretty easy but some of the optional content is rough.

I did no side content (literally none. Didn't get a single health upgrade or anything) and it was kinda tough so I lowered the difficulty.

On hard mode there are a bunch of pretty serious optional boss fights.

I think it was second-to-hardest difficulty, but I hear that the hardest is at least not designed purely for NG+ like in the previous game, where being at the beginning of a higher difficulty with no abilities unlocked is a real headache.

Not particularly. I beat it on highest difficulty and once you gear up its fine for the most part with mainly the optional fights being a pain in the ass (though even those you can wreck with the right armor sets and enchantments). Early on is also a bit of a bitch on that mode though as mentioned. I assume normal should be no issue.

There are about 6-8 fights that are hard, but those are late game and optional.

I toyed with the final boss.

well I am early game and just unlocking stuff, did the forges sidequests and some of the bosses were kinda hard

I played and beat it on give me god of war and I definitely had to retry a lot of fights but ultimately I think it was a fair challenge and not a BS one

I played normal and kinda wish I had played on a higher difficulty but I like to play experience games in the difficulty they were made for on first playthroughs.

I can't remember if you can mess with your equipment and stuff in combat, but I don't think so.
