In terms of record sales and stuff, this is absolutely true. Rihanna is one of the most successful artists ever, and is the only artist in the last twenty years to hit the 250+ million sales number.

Using the next best modern artists as comparisons, Eminem, Beyonce, Taylor Swift, and Mariah Carey are floating around the 200+million club. Pretty much everyone else at the top of that list is 80s or 70s bands.

Now, this might not be the end all be all metric to use, as obviously the way people consume music has so drastically changed in the last decade or so, but still...

Where Mariah Carey falls on the list isn't really the point here. I used her because, besides the three I already listed, she is quite literally the only prominent artist from the 90's to reach that level of success. She was being used as a top artist from the last thirty years as a throwaway comparison to Rihanna.

Stop getting so hung up on her. She's by and large already irrelevant to the discussion...

I'm never quite clear what these are suppose to prove. The fact that some people haven't listened to her songs somehow trumps her immense popularity and acclaim. Her shows sell out in like 10 minutes and thousands hang out in the parking lot just to be close and hear her songs. She plays 3/4 hour concerts, gives her fans their money worth, and interacts with them over social media.

But hey...some dude hasn't listened to her songs so she's a nobody!! Derp...derp...derpity doo.

Her music isnt bad enough to hate....or remember.

I love how some people wear their hatred/ignorance of Taylor Swift as if it were the badge that gains them admittance to the Cool Kids Club where only real music is allowed.

I don't believe that for a second. You would have to make such a strong effort over the last 15 years to avoid all possible situations in which you would hear one.

You'd have to:

• Never turn on the radio at any point
• Never go into a restaurant
• Never go into a store
• Never walk around a public festival/parade

Not to be insulting, but either you have and just don't realize it, or you never leave the house/turn on the radio/watch many movies and TV shows

I've never gone out of my way to listen to her, but I've definitely heard her songs. It's impossible not to have unless you're some kind of hermit.

She's better than both of those people

Im a 37 year old male so her music isnt the music I listen to but she is undoubtedly a superstar. I just took my kids to her concert in Detroit and I cant believe how popular she is. I wouldve sold the tickets but my girls wouldve probably broken my legs if I did that.

People saying "like hell she is" are really missing the point because those are the exact reactions older people had to Elvis when he came out too.

Exactly. She's been one of the worlds biggest artists for nearly two decades and people in this topic are balking at Elvis comparisons.

Like, do they not realize that Elvis isn't known for his raw musical talent, he's known for being the first massive pop star in America. You can dislike Swifts music all you want, but the comparison to Elvis isn't even about that, it's about being a star.

Aside from bars, I honestly don't recall restaurants playing music and the bars i would frequent don't play T Swift

Never go into a store

This one is likely to happen but i don't really pay attention to the music in stores unless a song i like happens to catch my ear

Never walk around a public festival/parade

Again the music festivals I go to don't do T Swift

Now I have heard songs by T Swift but aside from the stores your examples aren't great.
