I have absolutely no idea how true it is but from what I read previously, the reasoning for this is if he had leaked it to the public, it'd be a crime... classified documents and such. Doing it the way he did was (legal) whistle-blowing.

But I guess we'll see.

The way this guy did it is kind of the only way to do it without risking criminal charges. There are credible people backing him up.

However, it's highly unlikely an alien civilization found us and then came here. I'm sure life is plentiful given the scale of the universe, but intelligent life so close in the Milky Way is just too coincidental. NASA estimates maybe like 50 in the whole galaxy, and that's 400 billion stars.

I'm thinking it's Earth based or some type of fraud/cover up of something Earth based.

I'm not seeing the logic here. He could spend decades in prison given the severity of leaking it.

Yeah, he could be lying, but the way he's doing this is to protect himself. What he claims doesn't necessarily have to lead back to aliens. That's something he might just believe, but the truth might be different.

I don't believe he's uncovered anything alien, but what you're saying sounds unsubstantiated. That the "shadow government" would have killed him or that he's definitely doing this for a book release. The former sounds like nonsense, and the latter, speculation.

I'm sure there would be people that would give him safe harbor for literally the biggest discovery of all of mankind, that aliens are not only 100% real but they have in fact visited our planet.
