I'm ready for another roguelike after beating Hades last year.....not my favorite genre, as in I can't play them constantly but once, maybe twice a year seems to be the right amount for me

I didn't

I overall like it. Died in Biome 3 and am taking a break for a bit.

I know it's part of the genre but Biome 1 is getting old lol

I liked it but each run is too long for my liking. Best thing about rogue likes is that most of them are pick up and play. You need a good couple of hours to go through a run in returnal and thats just too long to invest.

Redeemed a couple Amazon gift cards from Bing Rewards, so only cost around $9 out of pocket

I played a bit of it and put it on the back burner. I was really enjoying it, but figured Id wait till I had more time to devote to it.

Too long to do a run.

And I thought there was too much going on screen to deal with compared to 2D Isometric top down rougelikes. Felt like I was always getting sniped by something offscreen

I know once you get past biome 3, the game starts at biome 4 (out of six), but even then, a run takes a couple of hours if you want to get a decent build.

I made it that far fairly quickly, and even though I thought the gameplay was clean and solid, I got burnt out really quickly because of it.

A lot of stuff about it really turned me off. Wasn't even the difficulty either, considering how I was able to beat the first and second bosses the first time I went to bat against them. I hated the malignancy system and parasites, I hated the parts where it just turns into a first person walking sim like Layers of Fear or some crap, the weapons were boring, the runs are too long, and the aesthetics of everything was just disgusting and not in a way I like. All the monsters in the first biome looked like ripoffs off those aliens from that shitty Tomorrow War movie, for instance.

Yeah I think that's the annoying thing about it. It's pretty much essential to at least build yourself up in each biome. The shortcuts exist but there's no reason to take them.

Did I read correctly that I think when you get to the 3rd area(biome) you can at least save your prgress without having to start from the beginning?

You have to actually complete the third biome right? Not just get to it?

I know there's the shortcut from Biome 1 to 3 but if I took that won't I be incredibly underlevelled?

I beat the game surprisingly quickly, either 10 hours or 10 deaths (can't remember which, played fairly cautiously) but found the entire experience super stressful due to the length a run would take. I don't think I'd like to play another unless they shorten run times or add much greater meta-progression to make dying not feel like such a huge waste of your life.

Good game though, but not in a hurry to repeat the experience (ironically).

For those who haven't played in the past year, apparently they added some kind of free Tower DLC that's arguably better than the base game

Never got that far but why would you want to do that? Wouldnt you be missing out on 3 biomes worth of upgrades?
