Onion rings are almost always better than fries. But I also feel like shit after I each them.

If I ever replace fries with something, I'll get sweet potato fries with a chipotle dip or something.

This. Namely, I get fries with my order and my girlfriend gets onion rings (or vice versa, not that it really matters when it's one bill). I generally don't want to fully get rid of the fries and I tend to be a little sick of onion rings by the time I eat all of a serving, but half and half suits me very nicely.

I often do the opposite: I get onion rings instead of fries.

I'll sub onion rings for fries at BK since I like them better but most fast food places don't carry onion rings. I've had Portillos' onion rings but they're a bit too doughy for me.

Rarely. I sub tots if anything. If I order onion rings it'll be an addition/appetizer to the meal.
