It's a shame because Willem Dafoe as Ryuuk was perfect casting

Agreed. He actually nailed it perfectly.

Also:

*gives himself the name Kira*
"What does that mean?"
"It actually means 'Light' in Russian and Celtic."

Lmfaoooooo

as bad as this adaptation is, Misa's character is actually better in this version than in the manga/anime.

Its a 3/10 with the entire 3 points being solely for Wilem Dafoe's performance

Kind of, but it's only because they gave her most of Light's characterization

They really should'be just used different characters.

Yeah, I think it'd be a lot better if, for a Western adaptation of Death Note, they just did another story set in the Death Note universe rather than trying to straight up adapt the original manga/anime.

The L casting was good. But the final act where it turned into an action movie was really lame.

yea, I don't disagree that Misa was more intelligent than Mia, but Misa was just barely a character, and more like a dick hungry tool that Light used.

Mia at least had her own agency.

Especially when they aggresively americanized the setting and kept the same plot but also not really.

Should've been marketed, produced and treated as a spinoff original story OR been a mostly faithful full series

Yeah, but a lot of it is because they gave Misa all of OG Light's ruthlessness, pragmatism and, let's be honest, intelligence, while leaving the actual Light from this movie a bumbling idiot who would have been caught numerous times already if the other characters around him weren't even stupider.

I think it ended up being better that way, because let's face it, the movie was going to be bad anyway, so at least it switched up the formula a bit.

True, but that's kinda why I feel like it should have just been its own entirely new story, rather than just poorly adapting the original story.

Then the story could just be around Mia and how she's making her dumbass simp boyfriend as toxic and evil as she is, resulting in said boyfriend actually killing her and taking the Death Note at the end.

Honestly should've just done it with Ryuk dropping the Death Note in an American high school and that's the only plot detail adapted from the original. Doesn't even need to be in the Death Note universe, just a different take on the starting premise, basically an alt universe thing. Would've been way more interesting.

Setting it in the same universe post Light's death would've worked too, just have Ryuk bored again and deciding to try his luck in a different country. Maybe set it like 30 years after Light to put some distance there and make the Kira killings coming back a big deal.

Honestly, with all of the mass shootings going on in American schools, a Death Note movie adapted for the U.S. could be pretty topical and disturbing...

Could it be most people hate it because it is not like the TV show. Because I saw the Movie First and I really liked it. Like Light in the show just seem to have good stuff just happen for him. You about to get found out, oh here is something to take the bullet for you.

I don't really care that it's not like the original show. It's just that every change they made was remarkably worse and doesn't even fit with the movie's own internal logic.
