So far I've played the first 6 / 8 hours or so and on my way to Rito Village but it's kind of the exact same thing as BotW.

You hunt towers, find koroks, do shrines, collect memories and do the occasional side quest. All in the same overworld. As cool as the Depths are and the sky islands, I don't think it's enough to make the same overworld feel fresh.

I wish I had played this without having played BotW. Because I'm going out of my way to explore but it feels like I'm just going through the motions at this pointm

Same for me. I am not really feeling the game, and I am taking a break from it.

It's a mystery. No one really knows.

I have not played it, so I can't comment on that. One thing I have wondered before, would people think BotW (and now TotK) is a good game if it wasn't labeled a zelda game? Just remove all the zelda references and have the gameplay be exactly the same. I would hazard a guess that the ratings and love would probably be a lot lower. But like I said, I haven't played the games, so I really can't comment if they are good or not.
To be fair, it isn't just zelda games either. I wonder how many people would really like a lot of the newer final fantasy games if they were called something else.

It feels like a really well done expansion. Worth the price tag but I find myself spending more time in the depths and sky islands and only spend time on the surface when I am grinding shrines and korok seeds.

They changed enough to make the game fresh and I am really enjoying it but grinding shrines again is really bothersome.

I've never cared about Zelda games, and I thought BotW was fantastic. Not my favorite game ever, but very fun.

Bosses are immune to the eat command so it won't be possible to end the final boss fight of the game by eating it.

I'm on my way to Rito finally.

But manually remembering to use ascend and reverse is going to be an issue.

It's like learning how to think with portals.

My kid has the handheld Switch. Is this game worth it on such a tiny screen, or does it need/deserve a full-sized TV?

No, it's really not, if we're talking about a whole technical package. But that doesn't matter, because it's fun to actually play. I say this as someone who honestly kinda hated BotW.

TotK is a game I can sit down and play and just have a good time doing whatever the hell I feel like in it, which is something a lot of games miss the mark on these days.
