On the end of the book of Deuteronomy, so there is plenty to come. So far its been 80% just rattling off names, numbers and repeating shit over and over.

But some of these laws set by god are strange. The biggest one is working on the sabbath (Im thinking thats Saturday by how it is written). Straight up says that anyone who works on the sabbath will be put to death. Its mentioned like 50 times.

No Shellfish. Some specific birds are off limits from eating. No eating bugs outside of locusts and grasshopper.

A lot of crimes result in exile. Pretty much anything around not atoning and knowingly doing a sin is exile.

If a woman gets a period, she is seen as "unclean" and needs to be sanctified

Rapists get stoned to death. Incest with blood gets you stoned to death. Incest with someone through marriage (like an aunt) and god will make you sterile.

Cross dressing is seen as an "abomination", along with wearing some mixed fabrics.

Then there is the sacrifices. God loves him some sacrifices. That had to have mentioned at least 1000 animal sacrifices so far.

That tabernacle must smell like absolute shit because they mention how it is just covered in blood and has animals being burnt upon an alter constantly and another alter where the fat and guts of other animals are being burned nonstop.

Its an interesting text, thats for true.

I once brought up the Old Testament to a relative who claimed he had read the whole thing. After being disturbed and surprised by some of it (it's neat that God actually hardened Pharaoh's heart so he couldn't choose a different path) he proceeded to say "well, we don't use that one anymore!". As though it makes some kind sense that the Bible has two halves, but only one counts for important stuff like a talking snake and a TARDIS that can only ever animal on Earth because reasons.

Even better is that most Christians only have a passing familiarity with the four Gospels and don't really pay any attention to the rest of the New Testament (or ask themselves enough questions about Paul and his role for example).

Yeah, even if you are 100% against religions involving it, you need to read it for it's themes. For all intents and purposes, for better or worse, it's pretty much the first book that was available for the general populace, and stories even today have some traces of it's themes in it in some way.

The bible does get metal AF sometimes.

And Jesus does have a lot of good stuff he says.

Many Christians like to ignore all the stuff about love and helping the poor though.

I talked to some orthodox Jews in Israel who practice this. If the woman ever gets her period, she gets her own section of the house while the man gets his. They can't use the same toilet, bath, etc. They consider it a little getaway vacation and when the period ends they each take a special bath and then have tons of sex. It's not seen as a moral failing, but a hygiene issue - though it could be seen as a failure for the couple to "be fruitful and multiply."

No it doesn't. This is a misreading of the scripture and misunderstanding.

In fact it considers unborn life lost to be deserving of capital punishment. Litersllt says if some dudes are fighting and one accidentally induces a miscarriage he has to die.

It doesn't recommend an abortion. It says if infidelity has happened then God will intervene and prevent the conception

Miscarriages can happen for a variety of reasons including outside injuries ot accidental which is what the scripture regarding the unborn life was referring to.

I appreciate you said that God supposedly prevents conception, but it's a struggle to imagine that people would believe that no baby born could ever be the result of infidelity. "Are you quite sure that kid's mine?" "Of course it is, darling, God would never have allowed the birth otherwise."

Well I didnt say that lol.

You're raising the comments out of context.

In the scriptures if infidelity was suspected an accusation had to be made and a special elixir would be given to the woman. If she did it then the conception wouldn't happen and if she didn't nothing would happen.

If nothing was reported obviously the baby would be born. Happened plenty of times in the Bible actually. King David fathered a son through infidelity.

Ah, I see. So they left the outcome in the, er, hands of God... I don't know about you, but that doesn't strike me as an entirely reliable method of determining guilt or innocence in accusations of adultery. Just finished the Book of Joshua.

That went from 0-100 fast.

Josh took the reins from Moses and the first thing god has him do is genocide the entire country. They tortured and killed 31 kings and purged their cities to inhabit them.

Sounds like they only spared a handful of prostitutes (called them harlots) that were used to hide and house the spies of the Israelites.

That book throws a lot of shade at everyone.

Im not religious, so im not sure how it works. Are christians still supposed to follow the 10 commandments? I the old testament just for the Jews? What about the Muslims?

I know the big 3 really center around Abraham in the beginning. So does it branch from there?
