Sure it's their opinion. They gave BotW a similar score and TotK seems to be more of that so not shocking.

I gotta disagree with the idea that weapon breaking ruins this this game

There are ways to play this game with cheats, and let me tell you something. Playing this game with infinite weapon durability makes it so much less fun.

I'm not even sure why, but it just ruins it. Like you'd be surprised by how much of the game is based on finding new weapons. Try playing with only the master sword and whatever you fuse to it for a bit, and you'll notice that when you go back to breakable shit, you've missed out on what feels like a large chunk of the game. Although I'm not sure if even this is enough to convince someone because I don't know if the master sword still runs out of energy in this game.

Sure they can fix this and add in loot mechanics similar to other rpgs like Witcher and skyrim or something, and that would likely be more fun, but for this game as it is, it gets really boring.

I genuinely don't understand why people get so riled up over this dumb shit. >_>

I can't imagine that anywhere in this world there's somebody fence sitting about a Zelda game, and the ultimate deciding factor in their purchase being the opinion of Jim Sterling. <_<

im just upset that his review brought the metascore down to a lowly 95 wtf!!!!!!!!!!

i didnt really like the weapon breaking system in botw but totk totally fixed it for me. most of your damage coming from fusion means you have pockets full of powerful weapons at all times

I thought the weapon breaking was kinda fun I dont like using the same weapon forever in a row change it up

I enjoy throwing breaking weapons because I fly in on my rocket hover bike, chuck all my weapons I don't want at my enemies, take their weapons and beat them with it

As long as its strictly because of gameplay and not Nintendo's politics or business methods

The game is painstakingly designed around the fact weapons have durability so I do think it's a bad critique. It's like complaining there's no saves in a roguelike

It's absolutely not a good score in gaming because the game industry has huge review inflation. Media rating systems are arbitrary and only gain meaning from comparing scores of different things. Overwhelmingly, games scored with a 7 have serious fundamental flaws (as Sterling accuses TotK of), or are completely unremarkable.

Metacritic itself is aware of this - games below a 75 are colored yellow, while movies remain green down to 60.

Hence why real reviews don't give scores. A complex opinion isn't so easily quantiified. If you want to know what they think of the game you need to actually read their words instead - oh the horror!

I don't take "professional" reviews seriously for that reason. They're just a business.

Seemed like a very fair review imo. The thing that makes all the whining hilarious is that it's mostly positive. They clearly don't hate the game as a whole, yet people will act like thats the case because they're honest about finding several mechanics (not just the weapon durability) frustrating.

Just goes to show that most of these people aren't actually interested in reviews. They just want someone to pat them on the back and tell them the new game they love is perfect.

The entire gaming industry and culture needs to grow the fuck up in so many ways

Exactly.
This pretty much summarizes weirdo internet nerds and how they approach differing opinions in general. To them, a reviewer can't just simply not like something (or like certain things). It must be part of some other ulterior reason; they didn't understand it, they're trying to get clicks on their website, etc.

For example, look at how oddly hostile a lot of people who liked the Super Mario movie got towards anyone who was even remotely critical of it.

It's not a new game, so I don't know if it even deserves that much.
