The Atari 2600s heyday in North America was 1977. However, due to the low cost of both the console and games, it hung on well into the 80s until the Nintendo supplanted it.

In North America, gamers were evenly split between male and female up until the North American console crash of 1983. When Nintendo took over in the mid 80s, Nintendo of America focused all their marketing on boys. Later consoles followed suit. As a result, console gaming wildly skewed toward that demographic and stayed that way until the 2010s when mobile gaming became popular with women. Currently, it's back to a near even split between the sexes like back in 1982.

Yeah, some of the kids in that video would have been in their 30s when Atari dropped. You just don't see many senior citizens into games.

My grandfather had an Atari 2600 but mainly bought it for the grandkids. He played it though. He owned a TV repair shop and was always into new tech.
